love smokign my pipe! had a few questions though-

smoking a pipe can last for quite some time, is it common practice to just carry around a pipe and smoke the same bowl throughout the day? do they make caps or something to keep it from burning your pocket?

Hi and welcome scotty! I don't think it's too common to nurse the same bowl all day. IMHO it would be better to partially fill the bowl many times, or use a smaller capacity pipe.
You can find "one-size-fits-all" wind caps, but I don't think they would be very good at preventing pocket burns. Better find a bottle cork for that.

My man Bob says you can smoke the same pipe all day, and whatever he says I abide by.
However, the general rule is to let your pipe rest for a day or two, and do not smoke it every day in a row.
A great item to have for walking around with your pipe is a small leather pouch that has two chambers - one for tobacco, and one for the pipe. I have one of these and it is great.

I don't advocate using the same pipe all day unless it is a cob or meerschaum.

Another solution might be a small pipe like the Tim West Sidewalker. Look at the lower left pipe.

They also sell wind caps, which many people use not only for wind, but to keep from burning a hole in their coat.

Damn...is that why there are holes in all my clothes? I agree with the above posts. Just fill the bowl with enough baccy for the ammount of time you would like to smoke. Make sure to let your pipe rest for you as well.
