So, i have been sitting on this review for a about a month now, and i belive i can do this particular blend justice. I was gonna be the first to do a review on tobacco reviews but sense i waited too long senoir Jim took that honor. With that said, thank you Jim for the great review because this blend is quit nuanced and hard to pinpoint acually components separately, which really helped in my flavore extraction.
The tobacco itself is a blend created by good o'l Russ Ouellette for the Hearth & Home marquee series. This blend is made from a blend that was already a staple in the Marquee series, El Nino. The make up is a hodgepodge of Virginia, Dark Fired, Latakia and perique, although i have not done the honor of purchasing a tin of the original mixture i can imagine its great just the way it is. What makes this blend intriguing to me, is the process in which this blend undertook its transformation under the watchfull eyes of Mr Ouellette.
They took El Nino and stuffed it into a tequila reposado barrel to rest, I am not sure for how long it sat in the barrel. I can tell you that the smell that comes from the open tin is amazing. The sweet aroma of tequila fills the nostrils with a slight tingle. Opened the tin shows colors of brown, tan, gold and black in a chunky ribbon cut.
The strong aroma mixed with tobacco is extremely alluring, almost like its an aromatic but with no toppings or casings. You can smell the tequila was a very fine vintage and strong. When you pack the tobacco, pack tight because it tends to burn a bit hot and fast but will reward you with an enticing flavor. Which is hard to pinpoint what is similar, still can't think of anything.
The tobaccos themselves are flavorful and all detectable except for the Virginia as Jim explained. It seems as though the tequila essence overwhelmed the light Virginia's and hides the flavor from them. The dark fired and latakia is what stands out the most with the perique in third. But with this unique blend the flavors meld together like a mixed drink made by the finest Japanese bartender. The smoke can be thick depending on your cadence but won't bight unless you try to.
It states that less then 1,800 tins were produced which is a very low number compared to some of the C&D small batch blends. It has been available for some time now and am surprised it's still available. If you desire something like Sun Bear without the honey, this blend could be good for you. The tequila is much more present in this but kind of has the room note which the wife enjoys.
Give this blend a shot before its gone because it's a lovely smoke. Maby not an all day blend but well worth it to me. Jim also gives this 3 and half but would get 4 from me if we're a bit stronger. Or if it were in flake form,, that would get it to the 4 stars. Maby I'll try makeing a cake out of it with a little red va to give it a bit more V.A flavor. Thank you for reading and injoy a pipe filled day.
