Welcome to the forums, Pourspellar!
I had similar questions a couple of months back.

First answer: Relax. :)

Second answer: Check your technique - are you puffing away as if the pipe were a cigarette or a blast furnace? I'm still working on slowing down and sipping...

Third answer: Don't sweat the relights - they happen. As your technique improves, this often resolves itself - or else you relax enough not to worry about it when it happens.
Those were the three answers that I found most immediately helpful (your mileage may vary). I also learned about drying out my goopier aromatic tobaccos before smoking them - poke around in the forums here, and search on specific terms - tamping, drying, relights, etc. Lots of good stuff in here - and I'm sure the more experienced pipe smokers will have plenty of good advice to offer you.

yes, sip your pipe. tap when needed. if your tobac is too wet, it will burn hot and will be hard to keep lit. hang in there my friend. things will get better.

Sounds like a packing issue. My first guess would be packing too loose. Secondly, new pipes do tend to smoke a bit hot until you get a decent cake built up. Just take it slow and let the pipe cool down to normal before taking another puff. Unfortunately, relighting heats things up quite a bit so just be careful while you figure it out.
What tobacco are you smoking? Aromatics tend to smoke hotter; especially if they are on the moist side. Drying them out helps some. Ribbon cut tobaccos are easier to start with because they typically burn evenly and are easier to keep lit.

Welcome to the forums @pourspellar. What you're experiencing is quite common. Pipe smoking takes practice. There's lots of videos on good packing technique. If you pack too loosely, you need to re-light often. if you pack too firmly, you may need to puff so hard to get a draw that it burns hot.
Also smoking tobaccos that are too wet or overly dry can make the pipe burn hotter. but most often it's from puffing too hard.
Keep asking questions, and also try searching Google (PM's search isn't so hot, but Google will provide good direction). Good luck and don't give up too quickly.

Welcome pourspellar! Don't mind the relights. I only take a puff off my pipe every 15 seconds and that seems to keep things cool. It also makes me slow down and enjoy it more.

Dry yer tabbaky, and experiment wif difrent loading techniques.
If that doesn't work you can blame yourself for not being good enough, or blame it on your pipe.
A good 500 lines of "I will not smoke hot and wet" on the chalkboard should teach that ungreatful lump of firewood to straighten up!
Smoke slow.

Dry your tobacco if you're having trouble keeping it lit.

Pack loose, or pack tighter. You'll have to figure out where it clicks for that pipe and tobacco. It will change as you change tobacco in the same pipe.

Tamp frequently and lightly.

Dump out the ash if you need to relight halfway through the bowl.
Practice practice practice.
