I have some pipes I'm ready to purchase. They are limited edition and are quite expensive, at least relative to my budget. It's not a question of my not having the money, I just have never purchased an expensive pipe before. To those who have committed substantial amounts of money toward a pipe, what was your thought process? These are really nice pipes and once they are gone, they aren't likely to come back. Has the investment paid off for you? Or were you happier with less expensive pipes. Thanks!

It doesn't happen often, but once in a while I have deeply regretted not buying a pipe I was hesitant about. And I can't think of a "good" pipe that I ever regretted buying, price be damned.

Less expensive pipes often do everything a more expensive pipe will do, and just as well. I think it's more an esthetic thing, and mainly for your head.

Unless they are of historic/personal significance, I would not pay premium for a "limited edition" pipe.

Unless you earn a living buying and selling pipes, you should forget about pipes as investments. Even the pros get it wrong more often than they would like to admit. Buy it because you love it and want to smoke it. And be comfortable with taking a hit if it turns out to be a bad smoker.

My first good pipes were Radices. I then discovered Castellos and purchased at least 20 in a relatively short period of time. But now, i discovered that i actually
like Radices more for a number of reasons. So the expensive pipe almost always loses out to the one that costs 1/3 as much. Find ones you like and dont worry about it. Most of us are not pipe investors or speculators. Sometimes i see pipes advertised on sites with mind numbing prices and think the H.L. Mencken was right about the birthrate of suckers.

I have zero regrets about purchasing nicer pipes. I can't say that a $500 pipe smokes twice as nice as a $250 pipe. It doesn't. However, I can say over time, the $500 pipe provides me more than twice the pleasure from owning it.

If you can afford the expenditure on the pipes you obviously want and consider expensive, pull the trigger and make it happen. Just set your expectations at a reasonable level for how well they're going to smoke. Understand the enjoyment you'll have in owning them will be for more reasons than just the smoking qualities.
