The first 3 are basket pipes I picked up from a local newsagents (the reddish one was my first pipe and I had no idea what I was looking for). I asked the shopkeeper where he gets them from and he said Peterson's, so I assumed they were Peterson seconds - but none of them have any marking whatsoever, and it looks like they ought to be stamped Irish Seconds if they are made by Peterson's.

The last one, with the much nicer stem, I picked up from an antiques shop for a tenner, it's incredibly hard to make out because it's so worn but there's an engraving in cursive on the bottom of the shank that says Ben Wade, and under that Colindale. Weirdly none of the Ben Wade stamps I've found online look like that. It also seems to have been repaired or tinkered with at somepoint to make it fit the fancy stem, which isn't quite flush with the shankIMG_20241005_195023.jpgIMG_20241005_195132.jpgIMG_20241005_195201.jpgIMG_20241005_195227.jpgIMG_20241005_195711~4.jpgIMG_20241005_200631.jpg

The red one doesn't look like briar to me. Personally, I don't smoke pipes if I don't know what wood they are made out of. For the Ben Wade, there are different periods of makers for that name. It appears that you have a London-made era.

Thank you! I still can't seem to see any that were stamped Colindale, which is weird!

I couldn't tell you what wood the red one is made of, like I said I had no idea what I was looking for when I bought it beyond a tobacco pipe to see if I'd enjoy pipe smoking (for which purpose it has served me well)

I also want to add, that I don't think that the stem on the Wade is original. The diameter does not seem to be matched to the pipe.
Yeah this is what I meant by it looks like it's been tinkered with - you can see someone's put a plug into the shank so that the stem would fit, it's clearly had some jiggery-pokery

@JoburgB2 you might be able to help as a local - the newsagent is the one on Panmure Street in town
I didn’t know about that newsagents, but will have a look out for it. I had heard about the pipe shop in Edinburgh and after dropping a family member at the airport, took the tram and a bus on a rainy day, schlepping all the way up Leith Walk only to arrive and find the place firmly shut! So I ducked into the Mother Superior Bar nearby for a pint and a nip. I went back in February, they were open, but I am sad to admit I was disappointed. They had virtually no tins of tobacco for sale, the bulk jars were empty, but plenty of vape supplies, bongs, and rolling papers. They did have two dozen pipes on the board, and I picked up a nice looking Parker to avoid this second trip being a total waste of time. But other than that, I know of no other pipes and tobacco in the Dundee area.1728207122730.jpeg1728207179192.jpeg

The newsagents on panmure street is the only newsagents in town I know of that specifically caters to pipe smokers - they've always got a stock of pipe cleaners and pipe lighters, barrel/basket pipes, and they're always getting new and different tins of baccy in too - can recommend them for buying baccy locally, not sure of the quality of the pipes (hence the post) but I'll say I've never paid full price for one.

I visited the pipe shop in Edinburgh towards the end of last year and I was also pretty disappointed - they had almost no pipes in stock, just a nearly empty display case, seemed more geared towards cigars. I did pick up a dr plum churchwarden though, and think they do blends in bulkIMG_20240930_183551.jpg
