First post here but have been lurking for a while now.
I'm more of a Dunhill Pat Era kind of guy, but when I saw a BIN for these two Barling family era pipes a couple weeks ago, I thought what the heck:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Barling-Estate-Briar-Tobacco-Smoking-Pipe-1752-1533-London-x2-lot-1-of-3-/323475658376?hash=item4b50a6d688%3Ag%3A0DMAAOSwqeVbsP0r&nma=true&si=VjEl5NJLw8ZJy844R8cq5i1Pn68%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
I know there were other eyes on this auction as the seller had two other listings with Barling pipes that ended right after I pulled the trigger on this one. The two pipes here (1533 EL and 1752 EXEXEL) I assume are family era because the model numbers begin with the number 1 (made for the English market). I read the article on Pipedia and if there weren't any EL's produced before the 1940's, I assume these are from 1940-1950's? Maybe Jesse Silver or another member could possibly narrow the dates down. Would be greatly appreciated...…...Thanks.

these draw fairly well inside has not been cleaned or scrapped some signs of use on the out side
From the words, I hazard a guess this chap isn't a pipe man.

Thank you. I don't know Jesse personally, but know from this forum, he's the go to guy on Barling's and with dating them. There a good amount of info on Pipedia, but it looks a little harder to nail down exact time frames compared to let's say Dunhill Pat's.

I'd say late 1930's - early 1940's. Notice the smaller arched Barling's Make mark. The best way to see this is the relative position of the B to the M, and the location of the M below the AR.

To say you did well is a MAJOR UNDERSTATEMENT!

The only thing written on the underside of the stem is “Barling Design “.
Hmmmm...I'm going to hold final judgement, but from what I'm seeing on the stummels, it sounds like replacement stems done by Barling's sometime after 1950. I could see this being possible, as looking at the pipes, whoever owned them took good care of them.

Could be. I was hoping for a patent number, but no such luck.

Yeah, the EXEXEL should be an easy clean up, but the smaller EL will need a jackhammer to get all that lava overflow off the rim. Both pipes are in transit to Steve L (Rebornpipes) in Canada for restoration. He just finished working on a couple of Blue Riband's for me and they turned out great.

sonny, are you in Canada, or the UK, or other? Just curious. Just tell Steve, DON'T bevel the rims.
