I've been exploring many different tobaccos lately, and I've noticed that all of them taste as if they've been tainted with soy sauce (or something similar; it's a salty/metallic taste at the back/center of the tongue). It also lingers when I'm not smoking. I initially thought the taste was common to a blend I was trying, until I noticed the taste in everything I tried.
Is this indicative of tongue burn? Might this clear up even with more gentle, slower smoking?

I've never experienced anything like that. Weird. What blends are you smoking, though? A short list might help because some tobacco types may leave a "salty" taste.

It started with Mac Baren's Golden Extra and Peterson's University Flake. But I'm tasting it in everything else now, such as Peterson's Christmas blend, McClelland's Black Cavendish, MB's Royal. Not fun.

Are you sure you don't have or aren't coming down with a cold or taking any type of cold medication?
This sounds like something that occurred to me a year ago when I was smoking with a bad cold and taking antibiotics.
Just a small theory.

I agree that you should try a thorough cleaning, I use Everclear to remove as much buildup as I can. That being said I would recommend using a separate pipe for aros. and English blends if possible.

I have been having similar symptoms, i think it is tongue burn...not bite... try using biotene, i think thats what its called, something at least similar to that anyway, its the only thing ive found that takes tongue burns away

The only thing I see all of those blends sharing is burley which doesn't taste "salty" to me, but then my palate isn't terribly sensitive usually.

I agree with a cold or medications sometimes be the culprit...as jchaplick suggested, Boitene seems to work well if you have tounge bite. I suggest using it a few times a day to see if that helps
