Hello everybody,

My name is Greg and am origanaly from Brooklyn, NY. I've been smoking cigars and pipes on and off for just about 25 years. Pipe smoking truly has been a journey and after many years of perusing the forums for direction I've decided to join, and maybe I can add something positive and helpful to the members and readers here.

I thought the favorite color question was an attempt at humor, but tone is hard to get through text, and I see at least one new member answered seriously so green I guess, I kinda like them all equally like children, although lately I've been enjoying cerulean blue.

And as for mixture no.79, another attempt at humor I thought as I tried it once over ten years ago upon the recommendation of an old tobaconist when I expressed interest in trying something better than captain black. I found it quite vial and downright painful but then again I've learned a lot since then and and my tastes have matured and changed members since then so maybe I should try it for the first time, again?

Welcome aboard Greg! Duane from Kentucky here. Favorite color is hunter green, and have found that after nearly thirty years of pipe smoking, aromatics like Mixture 79 are best enjoyed later in the journey, and shouldn't be considered beginner tobaccos. A heavy flavored English or Burley suits the entry level pipe enthusiasts to prime their perception of taste of smoke, and from there they can begin to explore the more ephemeral flavors of lighter flavored blends that often will scorch the tongues of beginners. Now though, aromatics taste exactly the same to me as they smell but my favored genre includes Virginia/Oriental blends.

Eggrollpiper, welcome to this motley assortment of troublemakers and ne'erdowells. You will find that pipe smoking is a continuing journey, and you never stop learning.
This is a great place to ask for advice, so ask away!

Welcome, dude! Give old Mixture 79 another go. I love the stuff. I'm certain I would've hated it when I first started though.

Welcome, Greg. I spent a year living in Brooklyn in the late 80's. Had a place right across the street from the museum on Eastern Parkway. Then spent a year in Hoboken.
I'm a new pipe smoker and learning a lot here in the forums.

Welcome aboard Greg. My wife lived in Greenwich Village and in Ridge, Suffolk County, for many years, reporting and food writing at Newsday. If you are a foodie at all and read the newspaper, you may know her. I commuted up there when we were courting in our early sixties when I was a widower. I liked becoming more familiar with the whole NYC and Long Island areas. Many fond memories.

Thanks for all the kind greetings. I will give mixture 79 another try. I notice it's sold out online in several places. Is the sutliff bulk version the same? Maybe this will give me an opportunity to patronize one of the few brick and mortars left by me.

The N.Y. pipe club sounds great, I had heard it met at Florios in Little Italy, one of my favorite old haunts, but since Florios is no more I wasn't sure the club's status. Anyone remember Florios?

And I also lived in Ridge and in Queens,in That order many years ago.

Finally, does anyone have an opinion on the current location of barclay rex and if it's worth making the trip, parking, etc..?
