It's been 9+ years since I lit up a pipe, and was never taking it very serious at that point (that was pre-kids and I had a million hobbies and all the time in the world - so cigars had always been my focus with pipes as an aside)

Had our second kiddo in March and had the busiest year of our lives - a pipe popped up in my instagram feed the other day and voila - my addiction is on - I'm older, I like fancier things, and I don't have much time on my hands... but instead of vegging out on the couch every night for two hours, I'd rather hop outside and smoke a pipe.

I currently own 4 pipes and never really knew about custom pipes, but after a week of nerding out on on instagram makers - I'm sold. I just told my wife I want to spend $1000 on custom pipes in 2022 - she said no.... (set the bar high... that way when I spend $500-600, I did good)

I'm pretty done with cigars, will still smoke on occassion, but they are too much of a commitment. I'm married, I don't need more commitment.

When I get into things, I get super into it - previously I never payed a huge amount of attention to tobacco, I'd go to my cigar shop, take the lid off a jar of tobacco, if I liked the smell, I bought a couple ounces and smoked it.

I'm now trying to figure out what to buy first to test the waters and find my preferences. I remember liking darker cavendish styles - but had no idea what that meant until I googled it last night.

I somehow came across someone talking about Vapers and specifically Escudo and I believe this is calling my name, but I need to get out, buy some and give it a go.
EDIT - I love things I can't have... and my search for tobacco to try led me to McClelland Dark Star (Personal Reserve) and I've GOTTA find some.... anyone know someone sitting on some tins that would sell one???????

Is anyone out there offering a good sample of different tobaccos to try, or do you all have a range I should try? (shopping around, I'm sooo lost by the names and trying to figure out what's going to give me a good intro to what I want)

Thanks!!!

Welcome from Michigan. I like a little everything, especially Virginia’s. A lot of macbaron and sutliff blends. Try them all and see what you like is what i do.

Welcome aboard from central North Carolina. I too know the joys and sorrows of living in a state capital. Pipes should be better on the budget, at least on the tobacco front. For the cost of one premium cigar -- let's say $15 -- you can get a tin of premium pipe tobacco that will give you about twenty smokes. If you land a tin of Dark Star, I'd point out that it has been frustrating for some to get it to light and to stay lit. I knew this in advance of opening my one tin, so I used a hand grater to make the pieces smaller and get them to dry quicker. That done, I discovered the sweetest richest Virginia based smoke I've ever enjoyed. I admit I'm glad I didn't have to pay $80 for the tin to enjoy it.

lol, thanks!
Lord... I just found two tins of Dark Star for $265 and $285 each... YIKES - wife would kill me for that. though - it would be cheaper than the equivelant number of times I'd smoke a cigar?
Notes taken if/when I land some

That's a nicely turned pot shape pipe; I'd like to see it once sandblasted, a great classic shape. You can get an awfully good array of tobacco for the cost one of these discontinued unicorn blends. Better to get a selection of current blends and let them age to perfection -- my opinion. People will be pining for most good blends sooner or later. Put time on your side.

Both. I know what mean about jumping with both feet as I do also. And, seeing I’m a woodworker, I’m already playing around and making my first pipe. Just going to take it into work now and play with some sandblasting View attachment 118550
very nice! looking forward to seeing your final results. Thankfully, I'm not a creator to that end - otherwise I'd be doubly screwed getting back into pipes!

Will start collecting some blends to age. What would count as decent age? 6+ months, 1 year, multiple years? I'm sure it varies by blend/type like wine - but I'm the most impatient person ever - so I may have to seek out stuff being sold that someone else was already patient with ;-)

Welcome to the forum, from the southern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, Frazier Park, CA. You're lucky to be able to just pop outside to smoke at a moment's notice. It's about 18 outside right now...no bueno.

Enjoy the journey!
