Hello,
My real name is Pat and I've just taken up smoking after a 25 year hiatus. FIrst smoked in college when I was reading Moby Dick, and all those seafaring characters would smoke a pipe about every chapter. I had a Pan - Head meerschaum, and smoking Cpt Black, gold and blue.
I'm wondering how you guys transport your gear. I'm using a Sure sm57 microphone pouch, and put my pipe and two ziplocks of smoke. With tool, lighter and a few cleaners it works, but I'd like to stuff another pipe in there, and at that point it gets pretty tight.
How do you guys travel?
Thanks,
Pat

I just have the pipe pouches (little bags) that a lot of pipes come in. They don't offer much protection, but they keep the pipes from getting scraped up. I put pipes, tins, and tools, all in a bag. If I have my computer bag or mallet bag, I can toss 1 pipe, 1 tin, cleaners and lights in there. If I'm travelling longer, I take my Indiana Jones bag, and can get a few tins and a few pipes in. If it's a really long trip, the satchel comes, plus another bag from a show that I can load up w/ some extra blends and pipes.
For plane travel, I keep any larger pipes w/ me on the carry on, tools go in the checked bag, along w/ tobacco. However, if I don't check anything, I haven't ever had issue w/ tools or tobacco carrying on.

I just use a pipe bag for traveling. You can find them in the accessories section on any good online pipe shop. I'm sure your local B&M would have one too. If I'm just gonna head out, I normally drop my pipe in a shirt pocket; I keep my pipe tool and lighter in my pocket; and I have a nice little tobacco bag to store a lil extra and some curled up pipe cleaners (I'll just straighten those out as I need them). Nothing to it...

Thanks for the responses.
Right now I smoke mostly on my front porch, but I live in Chicago and it's the top floor of a three flat. If I open all the windows and shut the porch door my smoke flows right out.
But, I travel down to St Louis and just want to be able to carry a few pipes and a few blends in the smallest, but not overpacked pouch. I guess I'm asking do you guys use manufactured pouches, or do you DIY ?
It's a dumb question I guess, I just want to converse on this my new best pastime.

That's hilarious, but mostly in a way that I want to emulate! I have a few little road cases I could convert. . .

I have a men's toiletry bag/duff bag that I use for travel. It has several pockets on the outside where I store Lighters, matches, pipe tools and that sort of stuff. I then layer pipe cleaners in the bottom of the main compartment and place the pipes (in their protective pouches) on top of them. Finally I Places tins of tobacco in the main compartment but lining the outside. This gives my pipes a little cushion. This arrangement is the one I use daily to go to my local B&M, to go to friends houses or to the park or wherever. The only Change I make to this arrangement for air travel is to leave the lighters and matches at home and to add a little cushion of some sort. I am able to check or carry on my pipes this way. I have traveled the world this way and never had any problems.

I use an inexpensive nylon shaving kit with two zippered compartments when I travel. This holds

several pipes, pipe cleaners, two or three different tobaccos, matches and a pipe tool. My wife gave

me a lovely leather churchwarden pipe carrier which I also use; it holds two pipes and the above

mentioned gear. For shorter trips, or around town, I carry a rough and ready pipe and the gear in

a jacket pocket. Since the question has been raised before, I will say, I haven't had any problem with

pipes and gear in carry-on luggage, often a backpack. Frankly, traveling isn't the best situation for

pipe smoking. Time is often short, and places to smoke are often restricted, but I still manage to

catch a smoke here and there, if not as often as I plan.

I have a couple of pleather combo pouches that I use on a daily basis. One holds 2 pipes, 3-in-1 tool, half a bundle of cleaners, lighter, and 2oz. of tobacco. The other holds 1 pipe, 2oz. of tobacco, and has a small holder for a few pipe cleaners. I think I paid $20 for the big one and maybe $10 for the small one.
