Rent a house on the outer banks every year. When I smoke on the beach, the baccy tastes like it is salted. So I sit on the deck and watch the waves roll in. Nothing finer than a churchwarden in the right hand and a tall George Stagg in the left.

Same as jchaplick here, I live 100 meters from the sea and often walk with my pipe right by the shoreline. The climate where you are probably plays a major part, just being by the shore doesn't necessarily equate bad smoking.

At times the wind coming off the ocean can be pretty brisk 35 or so miles per hour. It's hard to smoke a pipe during those times. On a nite though when the wind is calm you can walk on the beach listen to the waves and look up the stars in the sky as you smoke a favorite blend in your pipe. It's one of the most relaxing times one can experience.

I love to smoke my pipe while at the shore.

Generally; that would entail Gulf Shores in late October.

And, many moons ago I frequently smoked at Pyramid Rock beach aboard KMCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hi.

I always smoke my Ben Wade Calabash... seems to be particularly suited to the task, and always a pleasure.

I travel for a living and have smoked on the shores on both sides of the US with no problems what so ever, except I don't get to do it often enough. :)

I pratically live on the ocean...

I do live on the ocean. Sometimes I'll go into shore for a smoke and sometimes I'll just stay on the boat. It's no problem as long as I store my tobacco in airtight containers so it stays dry.
I agree with Puffy... listening to the waves and watching the sky is one of the best ways I know to smoke a pipe.

I lived in GA since '84, and have never been to the GA coast. I live about a 4 hour drive from any shoreline in GA, and hope to make it over there one day soon. The last time I was on a beach was '84, so I guess I'm way overdue. It does sound relaxing though.

Hmm, don't know what it is about me and the ocean/beach, but I can't stand it, loathe it with a passion (I could've written Billy Connelly's Hating the Beach sketch for him) - quite sad considering I've always lived only minutes from some of the most superb beaches in the entire world. Pfft, it's probably illegal to smoke on any beaches in Australia now anyways - seems to me that if you're anywhere where kids can go (they don't necessarily have to be around), smoking brings a hefty fine if you're caught.

I grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan and one of my favorite occupations was spending a few quality hours walking the piers and watching the various vessels coming home for the day. Unfortunately I didn't start really smoking my pipes until I moved to Kentucky. I miss the shore terribly and would love to go back there with a windscreen attached to my Peterson ARAN 999 and sit by the lighthouse. Pure heaven.

We have a lot of beach rules here (one reason why we go to Topsail Island...) but you can still smoke at all the ones I've visited. A bit windy at times, my last few walks on the Jersey shore with a pipe were a bit frustrating. (need a windcap, meant to pick one up at Boswells last week, couple of bucks for a pop on style, but not hinged)

We rent a condo every now and then at the beach and so far no problems. This is a new condo we're going to be at ad so far smoking from the patio or the boat docks I've had no problem whatsever. The waters are not that strong where the condo is at. So I just sit back and relax.

I live at Jacksonville Beach where the humidity durring the summer makes your sweat have sweat. Nevver an issue thus far. unless you are trying to dry your tobacco, be very watchful. You do have to continuously tamp or shag the bowl so you dont get too much of a gurgle, but other than that no issue. By the way I live about a 10 minute walk to the surf.

Interesting discussion. I can't speak for being by the ocean but I have enjoyed a pipe while sitting by a driftwood fire on the south shore of Lake Erie. The sound of the waves breaking and the warmth and flicker from the fire sure makes the eyelids droop. Windy days not so relaxing but calm summer evenings by the shore -nice.

One of my favorite places to enjoy a pipe is on a small island off the Florida coast. Right on the beach it tends to get a bit too windy at times, but I can always find a quiet patch of sand in the lee of the island amongst the mangroves. Use any available wind blocks and puff away in peace. Heavenly!

@ frtimmyd: Very nice! I don't know if it counts as the shore but I smoked my MM Legend on the aft deck of the Victoria Clipper travelling up Puget Sound and across the Salish Sea from Seattle to Victoria BC. It was a blast, but I had to make my hand into a wind cap.
(The pipe looks huge because of dognose effect)

@baronsamedi: Sounds and looks wonderful. Always thought the Pacific Northwest would be someplace I'd love to see.

It really is beautiful country. There's mountains, huge forests, snow in the winter and sun un the summer and if you like the ocean, there's plenty of that, too! I happen to love the ocean. Makes me wonder why I went Army rather than Navy back in the day.
