Tips from someone who has written way too many papers....
Write your conclusion first... That will give a focus and direction when writing the body.

The Introductory paragraphs should be written last.
Oh yeah.... make sure you get your "audience" correct, and don't wander between first person and groups.

I once had a professor tell me that once I had all the research done the paper would write itself. So I put that theory to the test.
I put all my notes, a stack of blank paper and a pen on the desk and then went to bed.
It didn't work.

I feel you on this one. I have to write 55 pages by Thursday. I smoke a lot when writing. Im not sure if it helps my writing but it sure as hell helps my brain function. If any one cares my paper is viewing "The Waste Land" from a Freudian/Marxist literary point of view.

If it makes you feel any better I have to complete a project (using a report and some sound and video examples) by 11:59pm Monday on the My Lai Massacre and it's impact on contemporary music of the time.

Mike, I'm taking this class for "fun". It's a History of Rock And Roll course. Seemed like a cool course to take especially since I ain't paying for it.

My paper due on Tuesday is on a business plan for a local second hand store for a well known charity. Since they have not made the changes suggested by the last two teams that helped them in this way, we doubt they will make the changes we suggest. Also this paper is being written by a team, with the PowerPoint show on next Tuesday.
I find making an outline extremely helpful. Once this is in place, the rest is just filling in the gaps. Also graphs, table of contents, pictures etc can certainly add to the length of document.
I use tobacco differently than most for schoolwork. This is the reward when the project is done. Someone gave me a sample of Frog Morton in the Bayue. My first taste is scheduled for next Tuesday night after class.

Tobacco and great writing seem to go hand in hand. I say light up a bowl, sit down, and let her rip! I'm from the school of free write, then rewrite. It's much easier these days with computers, lol.

Research is always the key to essay writing for me. I like to have a couple of pages of the points and facts I want to include, written out in the order they come to mind. The I go through them and group them together into what will become paragraphs (just a list of the point numbers in the right order)to give you an outline. As Lawrence said, write the conclusion first and use the outline to build your essay from the points and facts in your research. Then light your largest pipe and sit back and relax!
