Since most people are living in a new reality, I was wondering how us pipe guys were doing. Has your spending gone down, stayed the same or maybe taken advantage of some great deals.
For me I had stopped buying tobacco except aged tins a while ago. I am still looking at pipes believing there are going to be some killer deals in the months to come.

So what are you guys doing, habits changed or stayed the same.

Burn no gas and buy no gas despite rock bottom prices, just for starters. My wife does shopping online quite a bit, so we have filled up the recycling cart a week early with boxes and mailing envelopes, and now have recycling in the dining room and on the carport, waiting for the current cartload to be emptied. My pipe purchases have been small but recent including a new Kaywoodie Saxon billiard and my first Falcon, and three small baggies of favored C&D blends. I make forays to Walgreens drugstore for prescriptions and opportunistic items like paper towels, milk, ice cream, and cat food. We hope to someday buy toilet paper, but that's a long range dream. I always buy more blends than I smoke, so they accumulate despite my moderate pipe smoking. I need to do a Virginia festival, since I tend toward burley blends. I have many enticing tins on hand when the time comes. We're "shopping at home," discovering under-utilized items, clothes and household goods. I think we must, in total, be spending quite a bit less.

since I only smoke outdoors I've not really had much need to buy new tobacco. I only smoked one pipe this week the falcon with Tuskegee Airman. I had to get groceries and wasn't going to hire a taxi. Though I've had a few packages ordered of necessities and several packages of cleaning supplies I ordered before the shut down that are just arriving now. Can't wait for things to go back to normalish
Oh and it's funny how big my tiny cellar looks when I am not smoking my typical twice a day. And a nice side effect that doesn't out weigh everything else is I don't have to sign for snus orders. Maybe I should order five or six rolls. (snus is my main fix and is what I use everyday all day, except when smoking.

Not a lot different. Working to clean out the food cupboards slowly. No gasoline purchases. Restaurants- some take out, but spending less.

I made 3 tobacco purchases recently, but unfortunately they might come to a halt for a while. Too bad, considering I'm relatively new to the hobby and my cellar is nowhere near where I'd like it to be.

What sort of killer deals are we talking about and from whom? You think the big pipe/tobacco selling sites will slash prices?

I think it is a distinct possibility that the big retailers slash prices to get cash flow. The amount of pipe smokers who lost their jobs is of course unknown and the buying habits of mid grade to high lines could see huge hits. It is going to be a tough time for retailers as pipes and tobacco are luxuries and food, rent, and the basics of living are going to be the major focus for people's money.
I would really hate to be in the jewelry industry.

I guess I’ll just wait and see... was toying with the idea about ordering some of that limited edition C&D that’s being released tomorrow, and would like to add another inexpensive pipe but am being careful with money myself.

No restaurant work and no music gigs on the horizon mean no income for my household so pipes and tobacco, and really all other spending has come to a standstill. Pretty much just food, prescriptions, and necessities until things get back to some kind of normal.

No real changes yet for me. I did buy a new imp meerschaum pipe after i sold my motorcycle before stuff really hit the fan. I wanted to place a tobacco order but they are out of stock on a few blends i wanted so im just waiting. In the mean time im just revisiting stuff i didnt like and stuffed away over the years. I should be able to place an order with saved gas money alone. Anyone else getting better gas mileage? Im getting 2 weeks to the gallon now on my f150 lol.

Shopping at home is a great concept. It's remarkable what we can find that we had forgotten.

Before this went down, I have been looking for a sail boat and a hot tub, wanting both before end of April. Now I am going to wait. I think it is going to take a few months, or maybe even half a year to a year, but I expect prices to come down. Anyone follow recent history?

If they don't come down, that's fine. But if you can wait on more expensive purchases, I think it is wise to do so unless you like giving money away.

The markets are taking an obvious hit and I am not going to bet against this being a long term event (market or health wise). History is a good guide for prices in times of a crash, so I don't think it's even worth debating.

Those who are expecting a quick rebound were not paying attention to the markets before this even became a thing. I moved much of my sack of sticks and stones to cash and bonds half a year ago when everyone was saying 'how about that?!?' and patting themselves on the back for investing in a bubble where you'd have to be a brick not to make money. No thanks. It was going to fall apart anyway. The pandemic just shoved it over the edge.

A dealer I was talking hot tubs with called me the other day, trying to get a sale. He's been in business for 30 years. He sounded desperate. Really pushing, when before, he was cool as a cucumber. Told him what my new price point was and to call me back when he could make it happen.

It's nothing personal. I'm just not going to spend money on things that are so close to certainly coming down in price. And I don't give handouts to people trying to cash out at this moment. They know it's coming, and a lot of people are screwed. Those who can unload now, if they have to, are lucky. It's a bad time to buy much of anything.

I couldn't hold off on two things though.

1. A bidet. I'm not fighting anyone over toilet paper. Now when I walk to the toilet, it opens itself, turns on a little nightlight, cleans my ass like nothing ever has before and even dries it off when I'm done. Best purchase in a long while. A bit pricey, but worth it, in my opinion.

2. A Kamado Joe Classic III. Don't know how I lived without it. Now I'm smoking racks of ribs, beef, fish, you name it. Even got it on sale! I'd recommend getting one right now, no matter what the market does. Absolutely worth it.

But seriously, big purchases? You're out of your mind if you throw in for something expensive right now. The fire sale is coming in a few months; at least that's where I've put my money. Good luck!

Harris may seem crazy as a fox on some things, but I suspect he's closer to a lot than most people are comfortable with. Market wise, this has been coming for longer than the virus has...

The only buying habit I have that's changed is at the grocery store. When ever there used to be a long line, I would just wait patiently and listen to my music. Now if there is a long line, I pop a big gumball in my mouth and bite down and act very sick. Did I mention the gumball was filled with corn syrup dyed red with food coloring which drips down my chin? Believe me, people get out of line to get out of my way. Then I just pull out my handkerchief, wipe my chin off and to right up to the cashier with no waiting. Then I go wait in the car for my wife to come out. She doesn't have the guts to pull this off so once again she acts like she doesn't know me (more and more she acts like my parents used to) and gets in another line so I have to wait for her.
