I bought this two-bowled pipe recently from an auction, no clue what it’s made from or where it comes from but I had to buy it because it was going for cheap and I thought it was pretty unusual. My partner doesn’t want it in the house, she thinks it’s creepy.

I'm trying to discern if it is African or South American in origin. I'm guessing the bowls are ceramic of some kind, and it looks like one face is indigenous and the other some sort of colonialist. The eyes are interesting; are they painted or glass? I also can't decide if this is strictly a tourist piece or whether it is an actual expression by some pipe maker/artist depicting the duality of their community. It's an intriguing piece of work, beyond being creepy. I'll be interested to hear what others think. There could be an anthropologist among our number. I never cease to be amazed at the knowledge base represented by members.

The creepy factor makes me think it could be an actual piece of expressive art and not just a tourist piece made to sell quickly. Tourist items are often upbeat and/or stereotypically appealing.

I fifty percent agree with your partner. That is creepy. However I think that is why it should be in the house. I am willing to adopt it and give it a good home if your domestic bliss requires the egress of that unique and wild piece.

Unusual but not unheard of. I've seen them go up to four chambers.

Show her mine, yours is fairly tame by comparison.

nah your pipes are skulls. His pipe is much creepier in my not at all humble opinion. Skulls reminders of death, death is our friend. That two headed thing looks like it's scheming on how to make sure you fully understand the deep mercy death provides, in a manner that involves begging for death. Plus pirates like skulls and everyone likes pirates (except their victims).

There are "tells" in the portraiture of the two faces, but I'm not enough of an anthropologist to recognize which culture is present here. Even if it is a tourist piece, it would pick up on the traditional heroes and devils of that culture. It's an interesting mystery if the right person gets a look at this. I think the guy in the peaked hat is some sort of evil intruder and the other is a warrior opposing him, hence the creepy tension. This looks like work from Africa, South or Central America, or maybe the Pacific Islanders or Indonesia. If I had to guess, I'd say Peru, but I'm really in the dark here.

Yep, creepy/evil looking. Remember what happened to the Brady Bunch when they found that evil Tiki idol? If you start having bad luck, get rid of it.
