I acquired this unusual Hardcastle the other day. I would welcome any comments or information

Well now Ken? That's a no faced man child trying to spit on your tobacco that has also apparently assumed the position. Enjoy! It's a lovely pipe. :puffy:

Very cool... I love pipes with erotic scenes carved into them. :)
It seems to be much more common with meerschaum pipes, so it's interesting to see a wooden pipe with this kind of motif.

I've been tempted to acquire one of those erotic pipes, just to be able to whip it out at a pipe club, shop, etc. and watch the reactions.
I had no clue Hardcastle had carved pipes, that is very interesting!

I ask you to excuse my ignorance, can anybody explain me why this pipe should be called "erotic"?

I suppose that it could be the view you get when you are smoking it

So in all seriousness with my first comment aside, what the heck? I've not seen anything but traditional English shaping from Hardcastle. I mean not even a freehand that I can recall? Where in the world did you get this pipe Ken, and what are your notions about it? It has to be one of a kind or is it actually a Hardcastle pipe?

That ain't no man child; see second image!!
Very interesting; I have no idea about it except I like it. And for a pipe, it's as erotic as I have ever seen.

I don't know... I'd give it a 7/10 on the sauciness scale. Now This is an erotic pipe...

Yes that's an interesting pipe for a Hardcastle. The posing of the (female) character is rather odd, what is it supposed to represent? Inquiring minds want to know...
flaneuse: that's a piece of art to be sure, but the cat/dog looks to be a bit of a problem. Maybe we'll see some pipes carved in the style of Aubrey Beardsley, or Japanese Shunga prints at some time. My wife would buy one of those I'll bet.

I think that this one is an extreme and if it is as old as it looks, it would be worth a lot of money although the mouthpiece could be a replacement.

Victorian era carved meerschaums with even a breast revealed was considered very risqué at the time and seem to command really high prices, especially one like this which is so finely and intricately worked.

is it actually a Hardcastle pipe? [/quote

The stampings, which I found difficult to capture in this photo, says Hardcastle's underlined with a 'swirl' over London Made and the H on the mouthpiece indicate that it was made by Hardcastle. I don't know if there are any specialist Hardcastle collectors out there that could put a date on this one?
