Just ran across this and thought it would be worth sharing...

I'd recommend making a small test batch first before risking the little Isopropyl alcohol you may have!

How to make your own hand sanitizer
The Center for Disease Control recommends 70% isopropyl or higher, or 60% ethanol or higher to make your own hand sanitizer. This means, most alcohol in your in the liquor cabinet won't work. That non-aged whiskey, that's 80 proof, is only 40% alcohol. Vodka is also not strong enough at only 35-40%. Luckily, if you look in your medicine cabinet and find rubbing alcohol, this will do the trick. Aloe vera, or aloe vera gel, is also needed. If you have an aloe vera plant, the 100% aloe will ease the burn of the alcohol greater. Directions Mix 2/3 cup of your alcohol to 1/3 cup of aloe vera gel. I used Banana Boat Aloe vera gel found in the sunscreen section of the store. I also added about 8 drops of my favorite essential oil scent. You won’t be able to detect the fragrance until the alcohol dries on your hands. I put the 2:1 ratio in a large glass measuring cup using 1 cup of alcohol to ½ cup aloe gel and used a whisk to mix it. Transfer it to a mason jar so it won’t evaporate and use to fill a small squirt bottle as needed.

You need to use 99% alcohol with the aloe gel to get a concentration of 70%. You need a 70% alcohol concentration, or higher, to disintegrate the virus. Using 70% alcohol mixed with aloe will not provide any protection. We've got Purell for now, and the ingredients to make up hand sanitizer when that runs out. But keep in mind that hand sanitizer is NOT a substitute for soap and water.

I heard on the Wisconsin public radio station yesterday in an interview, that when you are washing your hands, you aren't killing the covid-19. You are simply wiping it off.

Thought that was interesting.

Heh, was just recalling how we used to sterilise the examination and operation tables when I was in veterinary school: alcohol spray bottle and Bic lighter. No can do on my sinks, though: darn caulking.

Soap and water is the preferred method.

Re sanitizer, is 91% isopropyl alcohol sufficient? Where would 99% alcohol (in normal times) be found?

Also, this virus has a lipid coating. Lipid is oily and sticks to surfaces kinda like a fingerprint.

We are out of hand sanitizer and can't find it in stores. I made my own using this...which is what we had in the house and finding the proper ingredients is becoming more difficult.

We keep a small bottle in each car and use it after visiting the grocery store, gas station etc.

Does it work? I have no clue.
Is it better than nothing at all? I believe it is.
Will I continue to use it? Yes, until I can find some at the store.

We have plenty of soap at home for hand washing. This homemade concoction is for the cars only.

In my part of WV, the base ingredients are impossible to find. I drive truck, tough without hand sanitizer. will try that soap that pumps out as a foam, then rinse with bleach water in a spray bottle. Bleach water, 1 gallon of water with 3 capfulls of bleach.

Some Everclear is only 150 proof, or 75% alcohol. In some places you can't get the hi-proof stuff.

I use the highest alcohol content isopropyl I can get, which here is 91% (182 proof). Use it straight, no bother.

Everclear:

"It is made from grain and is bottled at 120, 151, 189, and 190 U.S. proof (60%, 75.5%, 94.5% and 95% alcohol by volume, respectively)."

The bottle on my work table says 95% grain alcohol. Honestly, I’ve never seen it at the lower proofs.

That is not entirely correct. If you use soap, you will break down the lipid outer shell....the virus cannot survive after this is done. Hence, use soap and not Purell...Purell should only be for when you are in public, like grocery shopping.
