Just another OTC, I don't hear about it as much as some of the others, but I've always been a fan, except the big tin I have. I had bought a couple pouches years ago, and LOVED it, not at first, but upon revisiting it it totally hit the spot, it had this flavourful sweetness to it. I kept enjoying it so much that I decided to buy a tin, again, several years ago. The tobacco from that tin never tasted like the pouches, seemed to lack the flavour I fell in love with. It wasn't dry, though it is now. I use it to roll now, but I'm going to throw the rest out, I'm ordering another pouch instead after these last few years.

Anyway, other fans here?

Half and Half has transmogrified a number of times over the years. The blend I got to know back in the mid-to-late ‘80s had a little deer tongue in it, which gave it a sweet fragrance which informed the flavor of the smoke and gave it a kind of signature aromatic familiarity found in many drugstore blends back in the day.

I like the version STG has been making for the last several years, at least the tub version, though it benefits from sitting around after popping the seal for a number of months (I wouldn’t quite call it aging). A cob of the new H&H makes for a pretty decent morning smoke.

No exactly a fan. But smoke it now and then. Actually had it yesterday. Just tossed it on my bookshelf some time ago and was neglecting it. But felt like it yesterday. It has improved since last time I had it. Now the pouch is in a jar.

Just for fun ...

I always keep a tub of the stuff around somewhere. This one’s been open long enough that the top couple inches have dried to perfect smoking condition. (As long as I was providing a visual plug here, I thought it would be fair to let Gentleman Caller photobomb the shot.)

How long do you keep that tub before it's too 'old' or dried, or before you jar it?

I don’t have an exact answer. I had a can last for nearly three years before I moved it to a smaller container, more to save space (I don’t smoke the stuff every day). It’s got enough propylene glycol as a humectant to keep it from drying quickly. You might want to move it to a smaller container when you get to below the two inch mark from the bottom. It takes a long time for this stuff to dry out.

At what ratio do you guys mix half and half with the deer tongue blends?

I’m like one of those cooks that don’t use measuring tools. Wine in the sauce? Just dump some in. A teaspoon of salt? I just pour some in the palm of my (washed) hand and toss it in. A pinch of Gentleman Caller? I guess it could be about 20-25% of the bowl. I like both, so if I don’t get the proportions right, it’ll still be good to me. puffy

A lot of folks have a more discriminating palate than I do. To me, pipe smoking is less like organic chemistry lab, more like good old fashioned home cookin’.

Cool, yeah I gathered it would be a rather relaxed approach. It’s amazing how little deer tongue is required in a blend for it to impart some flavour.

I am told you can roll cigarettes out of the stuff. I tried it once at a NY Pipe Club 'picnic' and really wasn't to my liking but I am sure its a perfectly good blend having been around for so long.
