I'm quite taken by Hal O' The Wynd, sherlock holmes,Peterson's Irish oak, nightcap and EMP kinda in that order. Do you guys have any suggestions of other's I'd like bearing in mind I'm limited to UK purchases.

Am I right by saying I like vapers?

Well, as far as I'm aware, neither Hal o' the Wynd nor Early Morming Pipe contains perique. (Nightcap does. Don't know about the others.) But if you do like VApers, and you clearly like HotW, I'd highly recommend Rattray's Marlin Flake, which does have a small amount of perique in it. If you can get Pease blends there, Haddo's Delight is almost universally recommended as an outstanding example.
There are lots of perique fans here who can point you to other great blends. I'm personally highly sensitive to perique and can't smoke it except in the tiniest amounts. (I get a sensation like needles in my mouth!)
Enjoy!
Bob

I would like to direct you to a most interesting evaluation of Vaper blends: The Virginia/Perique (VaPer) Showdown, by a most astute reviewer named Scott, from Wilmington, NC., who goes by the screen name "Slow Triathlete". In that link he evaluates about 27 different Vapers, many of which are flakes and broken flakes. I find it most helpful.
Here is what I believe is his list and personal ranking to date:
1) McConnell Scottish Cake

2) Samuel Gawith’s St. James Flake

3) GL Pease Tribute

4) Escudo

5) GL Pease Filmore

6) Former’s Straight Grain Flake

7) H & H AJ’s VaPer

8 ) Low Country’s Waccamaw

9) Peretti’s Park Square

10) John Patton’s Cool Hand Fluke

11) H & H Rolando’s Own

12) H & H Anniversary Kake

13) G & H Louisiana Flake

14) C & D Poplar Camp

15) Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture

16) C & D Night Train

17) H & H Louisiana Red

18) C & D Bayou Morning Flake

19) Reiner’s Long Golden Flake

20) Treasures of Ireland - Limerick

21) Dorchester

22) Solani #633

23) Luxury Bullseye Flake

24) McClelland Bulk 2015

25) GL Pease Telegraph Hill

26) Kajun Kake

27) Luxury Navy Flake

28) Dan Tobacco's Tordenskjold Virginia Slices

Since trying Gawith St James Flake, I have stopped shopping for other vapers. The buck stops here.

You always have great links Cortez. No love for the Rattrays in there?
Rm's onto something about Haddo's Delight. It's "different" to me then a normal VaPer. It's got something special about it that sets itself apart. (Not ahead mind you, but apart). It's like a lady whose got that certain "something" different about her, it's alluring yet sets her apart from the rest. I never automatically think of it as a VaPer, but that's not an unfair label.
I have a feeling it's a you'll love it or hate it kind of thing.

Sherlock Holmes, Nightcap, and HotW are not VaPers. Sherlock Holmes is a Virginia/Burley blend. Nightcap, while it has perique, is a full English.
I gather that you are rather new to the pipe. You've already discovered Peterson, Dunhill, and Rattray - how much have you explored the other blends offered by those firms?

Very new Jud. I think I may be confusing periqe with latkia.

I thought before I started smoking a pipe that aromatics would be for me and tho I enjoyed Peterson Xmas 2012 I couldn't stand any of the Peterson's or Carey'swith flavours. I like a Smokey nicotine (English?) Smoke

Love Hal O' The Wynd. And I do believe it does contain Perique...but not certain if that qualifies it as a VaPer.

My favorite vapers are St James, Escudo, Solani 633 and Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls. All are flakes and have big time space in my cellar. I have never been able to detect any perique in Dan Tobacco's Tordenskjold Virginia Slices or Orlick Golden Sliced, it is is in there it is minuscule. I have tried the Reiner Long Golden a bunch of times trying to like it, but the White Burley in it gives it an off putting taste to me.
roth, have you smoked the Former flake much and if so how do you like it?

Yeah, that could be.

Irish Oak has perique. That's the spicy note you taste.

Nightcap and EMP have latakia. That's the smoky, leathery taste. Nightcap also has perique.

Sherlock Holmes has no perique and, if HotW has any,it is so miniscule that I can't taste it at all.
You might want to check out this article on Pipedia about pipe tobaccos.

Have you tried Peterson's Old Dublin? That's a classic all day English. Try some of the Dunhills, too, as well as Rattray and Samuel Gawith, which should be readily available to you.

Since I have a strong allergic reaction to perique, I try very hard to avoid it (and because of that, I'm sticking with my assertion that Hal o' the Wynd does not contain perique). However, because I try to avoid it, I'm certainly no expert on it. (I can take it in tiny doses, such as in Marlin Flake, but that's about it.)
Since the OP is wondering if maybe he is confusing perique with latakia, I'm wondering if the perique fans here would care to give him a "test" blend that would help him distinguish perique. Because of my very limited experience with it, I'd tend to suggest Haddo's Delight which I know has no latakia whatsoever and a healthy (or unhealthy!) dose of perique. Are there others that are latakia-free but perique-forward that you'd suggest?
Of course, there are hundreds of latakia blends that don't also contain perique. . .

I'm considering buying some blending tobaccos. Maybe tasting them on their own will help me distinguish exactly what I'm tasting in blends. I've been a chef for years and. Many of them as grand saucier so I think I might even do well at my own blend using similar formula I used to perfect a sauce. Also drawing on that experience I know different people taste differently. For example I once had a chef who described what was widely considered creamy as musty.
I'm loving this hobbie

Just let me caution you about smoking straight perique. It can be very high in nicotine. . . and, frankly, I've never known anyone who could take more than half a bowl; it's quite potent. (By contrast, I used to work at a tobacco shop where we had several customers who actually smoked straight latakia, including one woman. Latakia, while smokey smelling is actually fairly mild tasting when smoked straight.)
Glad you're enjoying the hobby!
