I have built my collection up to 4 pipes now. So I have a question I have one non-filtered Capri Billiard full bent and it tends to gurgle. My question is does it gurgle because it is non-filtered or because it is a full bent? I smoke this pipe the same as I do the rest of my pipes. I do not have any problems with the others.

Spit and Gravity turning the bend into water park slide. I only have this happen sometimes always bent pipes, and all my pipes bent or straight are filterless.

They are MM Legend bent, MM Maple Country Gentlemen bent, and Carey Magic Inch Billiard straight.

I think Dervis has nailed your problem. Run a cleaner through it when you run into the problem. No biggie. (You might want to bend the cleaner slightly to help it make the turn.)

Well then, now hmm... I don't think cobs ever gurgle... not in my experience anyway, and I don't have any experience with the Magic Inch pipes. With this knowledge though, I'm more comfortable saying: "You get what you pay for", when it comes to briar pipes anyway. All of my briar pipes are basket pipes, (I'm 99.9% certain that Capri is a big supplier of basket pipes) and pretty much all of them gurgle to some degree at some point during a smoke. That's why I've decided that if my patience will allow it, I'll be saving my earnings for higher-end pipes, in hopes of decreasing the odds of finding my self the possessor of many a gurgling, leaking pipe. There's nothing I hate more about pipe smoking than having a pipe leak tobacco juice and oil onto my lips and tongue. GROSS.

Dry your tobacco out a bit more and smoke slower.

I have only bent pipes other than my cobs.

Its not spit its steam from your toby.

Its baccy juice.

with straight pipes the steam is pulled all the way into your mouth.

with bent because gravity and you are almost smoking slow enough it condensates in the stem and stummel and collects in the bottom of your stummel and bowl.

So you are doing well just slow down abit more and maybe dry ya toby a few more minutes before loading ya pipe.

IMO, it has nothing whatsoever to do with "spit". One would be hard pressed to intentionally

force a significant amount of saliva into the stem -- much less do it inadvertently.
The liquid is from condensation as the relatively warm smoke stream, which has the capacity

to hold a good deal of moisture, is cooled by the shank and stem of the pipe. Lengthening

the stem (churchwardens) or introducing bends in the stem (oom pauls, etc.), or placing

obstructions in the shank (filters and stingers), will promote condensation.
Smoking your tobaccos a bit drier, more slowly, or in a dehumidified environment will help a lot.

One must never overlook the possibility that this particular pipe is finicky about the way it is packed.

Bent pipes tend to gurgle. Especially if you clench them. That's why most of mine are straights or quarter bents. I thoroughly dry my tabac before loading a bent. And that helps somewhat. Like, also, I'd never smoke an Aero in a bent.

Loco and Cortez have hit it on the nose, I believe
I love my bents but they do lean towards the gurgle now and then
Having a cleaner handy is one way but I think drying tobac out more thoroughly is an excellent idea to try
I'm going to try that myself

If I am not careful, I can make any pipe gurgle. I am AD/HD and ALWAYS busy so I hoover my baccy as my default smoking method.
I have to seriously give the nod to 'try' to focus on relaxing with a pipe. I also have some kind of thing where I don't want it to go out, and puffing away tends to keep it lit.
lol Yes, I am neurotic.
Anyway, make sure to sip the baccy and the gurgling will be minimized as well.
=)

I have had a couple of pipes with that problem.
They smoked well once I discovered which tobaccos they like - some that taste good and smoke well when nice and dry.

And I had to learn to smoke slowly. Going slow enough solves most problems.
Also let the pipes dry thoroughly. They are much more likely to gurgle if smoked twice on the same day.

Some inexpensive pipes are drilled improperly and will gurgle no matter what you do. I have some bent pipes that never gurgle, and a couple that do need a pipe cleaner once or twice a bowl. If you are drying your tobacco properly and smoking slowly and the pipe still gurgles, it is the pipe.
