Not wanting to hijack your thread Prairiedruid, but watching that film got me to look at others. One in particular was about growing and selling in North Carolina and was most interesting.
It's quite amazing too how labour intensive the entire process is.

I'll have to watch that one later on tonight. I'm reading a biography of George Washington. I found it interesting that early on on Mount Vernon he was planting tobacco but he thought his wholesaling agent in London was not being honest with pricing and payments and generally not trying very hard. This coupled with the fact that tobacco is a VERY labor intensive crop led him to switch to growing small grains instead. He could sell the grains locally and now had a bunch of labor freed up for things like distilling and construction.
