I have bought a Group 1 pipe (Peterson rustic Belgique) after encouragement from fishnbanjo and other

Forums members on their enjoyment of small pipes. I had always thought they were too toy-like and

couldn't imagine how they could reward bothering to pack them. Wrong. First of all, mine smokes much

longer, proportionately, than you would expect. I can easily get 20 minutes out of this Group 1, which

is about right for many smoke breaks, and perfect for an appetizer or dessert bowl around smoking a

larger pipe. Also, the Group 1 squeezes a surprising amount of flavor out of tobacco; it's a slightly different

experience than a larger pipe, in a good way. I would definitely encourage adding a Group 1 or 2 to your

selection of pipes, to find out how it might contribute to your rotation.

Sounds right, I get 15-30 minutes depending one the pipe and tobacco selected. I hoped you would find a group 1 a valid companion to your rack, cheers.

Life is such these days I find I'm usually reaching for a group 1 or group 2. Rather a small bowl than no bowl at all, eh? Hope to get back to larger pipes when the weather improves here and I can sit out on the back deck again ... which should be next June :crying:

I was thinking of getting a Group 2, to provide a stair step from the Group 1, but seeing what a good smoke

I can have in the Group 1, I may just stick with this size, depending on the pipe itself. There aren't all that

many attractive smaller pipes until you get into higher level pipes. Dunhill makes some beautiful Group 1's,

but they have Dunhill prices. I suspect many people are stopped by my original notion that these are toy

pipes and don't really deliver a good smoke. It's just about the right smoke for many situations, and comes

across full-strength.

My main pipes are all group 2's or group 3's but with some cake I can't get my pinky into them, so probably hold a group 1's worth of tobacco. I smoke some strong flakes that I wouldn't even enjoy in a bigger pipe. Half a flake is good for me. Glad you're enjoying your new pipe. I like the looks of that belgique, but if I bought one, I'd have to get a custom stem that is shorter and more proportionate to the bowl with a narrow bit. I think that would give it a really nice old-timey look and make a great pocket outdoors pipe.
My bigger pipes very rarely get smoked in the last year that I got into smaller pipes.
Did it take long to break in that belgique like most peterson's?

bryanf, the Peterson Belgique is an easy break-in, so far as I can tell at this point. It lights right up,

and only gives back tobacco flavor in good strength. The airway is well engineered. My only doubt

is its possible fragility. I have some rugged little Group 3's that I would feel more secure pocketing,

that were cheaper too, though now they are valuable to me because they've proven themselves.

Iwan Ries has its own line, Iwan Ries Exclusives, Group 3's, called compact pipes, that are above their

price level in quality, so you might want to consider those too -- iwanries.com. They have other full

size pipes, but I think they have three at the top of the page that are compacts.

I have a MM Eaton also. I get two half hour smokes easily out of it. I also have a small Stanwell that I use for flakes that will smoke way longer than half an hour.

cigrmaster, rather than fumble with my technological ineptitude, please just look on smokingpipes.com

under Peterson pipes; they are featuring the Peterson Belgique. I bought the rustic, and paid somewhat

less than their asking price from a different retailer, but they have all the info on the pipe, and a good,

crisp photo of the particular pipes on offer. There were two when I last looked.

I have been eyeing this group 1 (maybe sub-group 1) forever due to its fantastic blast. If it were cheaper I would have it already. This has a beautiful blast and no doubt expertly crafted but not much briar for the money. Nearly as much as a full size pipe from this carver. Ah, but that blast sure is sweet!
