Greg's Westminster A New Tin, an Old Can and A Question.
First the question; after opening a newly acquired 2 oz. tin of Westminster and smoking some in two clean, well-rested pipes there was a disappointing lack of flavor. In both pipes a little smokiness and a bit of tongue tingle, and then pretty much nothing. My taste buds were budding just fine - I could taste a stout freshly Moka Pot brewed cuppa coffee, a big bagel with a healthy schmeer of cream cheese, a fresh sliced peach, and a bowl of Orlik Golden Slice. After a few days of the tin being open the flavors from the new tin are strong and wonderfully wonderfull. I've heard of this stange, to me, situation before and was wondering why some fresh tobaccos need to "breathe" a bit before reaching their potential - just being curious. I have a somewhat aged 1 lb can of Westminster that was purchased back in May of 2016, and opened soon after. It's been kept at a fair level of humidity with a Water Pillow portable humidifier. I smoked about half of the can but due to serious health issues had to quit smoking for a period of time. Picking up the pipes after recovering, English blends just didn't taste right, so I applied Virginias and Va/Pers to my system. About a month ago, thinking it was worth trying the ole Westminster I loaded up a pipe and the experience was mighty fine. Wanting to compare some fresh weedage with the old stuff I ordered several 2 ounce tins from smokingpipes. I don't know if there are many comparisons to an older OPENED can and a new tin, but here's one:
The tobacco smells sweeter by far in the old can. The taste from the new tin is, as expected, smokier, a lot smokier; there are noticable changes as it smolders down the bowl; it's quite fuller; spicier, with that delightful effervescence dancing on the tongue; it tastes almost as sweet as the aged toback; it's gamier; and it's marvelous.
