See this all the time - but what is a great smoker - especially refurbished estates - flavor at every puff or every few ?? -
just received a new savinelli long john under $ 100 - first two bowls already taste at every 5 or so draws - to get the flavor i need to draw fuller & fuller about 4 times then pass thru the nose i often taste the tobacco
but .. great smoker - does that suggest flavor on every draw ?

I'm sure that you'll get a variety of opinions on this, but my take on the term great smoker would be that the pipe smokes cool and dry without gurgling, has an easy draw and in the case of an estate model, does not taste bitter or sour.
The flavor factor is more a matter of the tobacco itself. Every blend has unique characteristics, based on the quality of leaf, curing methods, and the skill of the blender when applying any flavoring agents.
Many on the shelf aromatics smoke wet because they are made with heavy doses of preservative chemicals.

A great smoker to me always smokes cool and dry, draws easily but steadily so you don't smoke too fast and hot, and produces consistency of flavor -- not that it makes everything takes the same, it's just that each smoke of a given blends is like the last smoke of that given blend. I have a no name vintage made in France Algerian briar prince that ain't a collector's pipe for sure, but is one of, if not the best smoker I own. Very revealing of the blends you smoke in it, always a dry, cool smoke (and cool in the hands).
Flavor on every draw? I think that flavor on every draw should be something you get with any pipe. Not getting it might be a function of the tobacco more than the pipe.

A great smoker is one that is easy to smoke, and makes the tobacco sing, in my humble opinion, of course. My Savinelli Bing's favorite was horrible with aromatics, but is awesome with Revelation match. I smoke it almost every day. Maybe you merely need to find the right tobacco for your pipe.

When I call a pipe a great smoker I am talking about a pipe that never gurgles or requires a pipe cleaner to soak up excess moisture. A pipe that smokes cool and that brings out the best flavors on my favorite blends. A pipe that has a very comfortable stem( I clench all the time) and that is light weight. A pipe that is drilled properly and has a nice fit and finish. A pipe that can take a fluffy pipe cleaner, which means the shank and stem openings are large enough so the pipe draws easily and thereby practically smokes it self. All of these things must be in a pipe for me to call it a great smoker. Now you do not have to spend a fortune to get a great smoker, I have an old Peretti pipe that has all the things I mentioned and I paid maybe 50.00 for it.
