My father was born in 1919. His father immigrated from Wales and came thru Ellis Island in 1898. My grandfather was a coal miner near Wilkes-Barre PA and died in 1943. My father always told me that he smoked a pipe. Unfortunately, he had no pictures of his father as my dad was in the Army when he died and his belongings discarded before he returned home. Well, in my moving my parents (Dad is now 96) last week, I found several old photos in their picture albums. This shows my Grandfather with a pipe in his hand and my father in overalls. The picture wasn't dated, with only names on the back. My father looks to be around 8 years old, so the photo was taken in approximately 1927.

Wow. That is cool. Looks like a big family!
Do you know if your grandparents spoke Welsh?

Glad for you! And a pipe smoking coal miner from Wales named Jones, too! There may have been others in that era! Great find, and thanks for sharing that. My nasty sisters have all the old photos, and I think my paternal grandfather smoked a bit, but no photos.

Seeing your pic, Al, reminded me of this one -- my great-grandfather's half brother. Also a Jones! But no relation. This would have also been from the late 20s or early 30s in Henry County, VA.

Looks like this thread is going to be hijacked to some degree by grandfather pipe smoking photos. (sorry Al)
I recently found this photo of my maternal grandfather, that my mom told me smoked a pipe. Unfortunately I never knew him as he died a little over a year before I was born. I cropped this image from a little larger photo that had another person in it whom I didn't know. But pictured is my maternal grandfather and grandmother. I no idea what kind of pipe he's smoking but it obviously had a light colored stem, possibly yellow would be my guess, and a small metal band. Maybe a Yello-Bole? The photo as near as I can figure dates to the early 1940s. I posted a few months ago about discovering a poem he wrote in which he was gifting someone some Tuxedo tobacco, so maybe that's what he smoked too.
You can probably figure I'll be doing some more digging into his history, and will probably have to get a yellow stem pipe for my self now!
