Whilst working on my psychology course work (my subject is LSD, fun stuff), I stumbled upon a ton of graphs for different drugs taken by specific age groups. And, a bit surprisingly, Pipe Tobacco was included. This may only be interesting to me, but it's kind of cool to see how many, out of a group, smoke pipe.

Here's the website I found this on: https://www.samhsa.gov/data/sites/default/files/NSDUH-FFR1-2015/NSDUH-FFR1-2015/NSDUH-FFR1-2015.htm

The number is a little misleading to me. 2% of the surveyed group is still very small. Interesting to see it's the 18-25 age group though.
Good to see you have an avatar now, guess you'll be hanging around? :puffy:

I mean, it's still an interesting difference in group. This may just be those vocal about it or caring to add to research. I'd be curious to see an entire research around the world done, that would be cool.

Planning on it!

An estimated 12.5 million people aged 12 or older in 2015 were current cigar smokers, and 2.3 million were current pipe tobacco smokers (Figure 13). These numbers correspond to 4.7 percent of the population aged 12 or older who were current cigar smokers (Figure 18) and 0.8 percent who were current pipe tobacco smokers (Figure 19). Among people aged 12 or older, the percentage who were current cigar smokers was lower in 2015 than in most years between 2002 and 2012, but it was similar to the percentages in 2013 and 2014. The percentage of people who were current pipe tobacco smokers in 2015 was similar to the percentages in most years between 2002 and 2014.
Found this under the passage, so pipe smoking isn't the most common thing in America (which we all knew).

18-25 equals college kids trying to look intellectual
>26 equals those who stick with it either because they are doing graduate degrees or actually like it.
I'd love to see the numbers for those over 35...bet it's a fraction of the 0.8%
But then again, its nice to be part of an "elite" group :)

The 18 to 25 age group is the only age group that is showing a growth in participants. This probably due to the all of the negative advertising associated with cigarettes. Most TV "programming" has added political messages within the plot of the show (South Park, The Simpsons, etc.) These shows are advertised to that age group and younger. Pipes have generally been left out of the negative connotations in these shows, and have even been portrayed in a positive light. Even goody two shoes Flanders is quoted as saying "Time to Fire up the Briar."

Fascinating! What's noticable, at least in my state, is that no-smoke states ultimately have less smokers. I've been lucky to find folk who don't care if I smoke near their establishment, but I'm sure this no-smoke attitude helps deter a lot of smokers.
