Hi all, I just bought and refurbished a ten year old Şahin(a pretty good famous Turkish pipe brand) which is now my first briar, and what i can call as my first "proper" pipe.

Here is what it looked like when i bought it

The owner said that this was his first pipe, and that it was ten years old. When I got my hands on it, everything was clogged up and it there wasnt even any airflow. It almost seemed like this pipe was never cleaned in those ten years. After a reaming with my czech pipe tool(which seemed to get the job done just fine), unclogging the airway and a quick deep cleaning with isopropyl alcohol for the bowl and some soapy water for the stem and some staining with two coats of olive oil, here is how it looks like now:

Hope I did a good job at bringing life back to this beaut, and it smokes beautifully now and im really happy with this 14$ bargain I managed to find. Its a really well-made pipe and a pipe like this from the same maker costs somewhere around 85$ brand new these days, and honestly everything about it feels quality to me so im really glad I managed to bring it back to life!

Any recommendations to further improve the condition of the pipe are always welcome

That looks like a great pipe! I'm sure it will serve you well for years to come. Nice job on the restoration.

If the pipe was really clogged up when you bought it, you may want to deep clean the shank with lots and lots of alcohol-soaked cleaners.
The shank and mortise is where most of the :poop: resides.

Happy puffy with your new pipe.

Good looking pipe. I'll second the suggestion to give the shank a really good cleaning to get any bad tasting residues out. I like shank brushes for this followed by pipe cleaners.

Thanks for the heads up, i feel stupid for not paying much attention to the shank now :p

I havent really noticed bad tastes, though maybe thats because im a novice and just dont know what to compare to lol. I've been going at it all morning with alcohol soaked q-tips and pipe cleaners but there is still some residue left over, I think I will just sit down and go at it for a while whenever I get te chance because there is no way im cleaning all of this is one sitting :D

Would filling the shank with cotton and soaking with alcohol overnight work?

I usually shine a bright light down the shank
If it is very clogged, I’d use small jewellers screwdrivers to ream out the :poop:
Then alcohol dipped cleaners to clean it out.
I do leave the cleaners in overnight to dial up

I leave the cleaners in overnight to dial up the inspissated muck.
And repeat until clean

Leave to dry for several days before loafing up for your inaugural smoke.
An alcohol soaked shank in an very old pipe is a recipe for a cracked shank if not allowed sufficient dry time
