Tom Howard, we all know the comedy, radio and pipe making but I also enjoy his inventiveness and his I can do it cheaper and better myself attitude.I have many things in common with the man .Whether it be re-purposing something for something else or digging through the trash for what others think is useless. Theirs something satisfying about doing yourself and knowing at the end of the day when your hands are dirty you didn't just stand by a watch the work get done.
I've been searching for a Tom Howard Oom Paul for some time now,the shape was never quite right or the jokers on the bay bid it up to ridiculous prices . Last week I finally got my chance. She popped up, the perfect shape ,she was clean and there were no imperfections (cracks, filler) other then light stem oxidation . The moment came end of action after 9 days of watching .I put in my usual low bid and to my amazement won it for $ 26 ,very happy indeed .She arrived Monday and was in very nice shape very little cake and the oxidation was nothing to remove .A quick clean, some work on the stem,a run though the retort and she shined again.I have also found using Howard"s butcher block conditioner on the briar before the final carnauba wax buffing brings out the natural wood grain .I've been using Howard's on many of my Custom-bilt ,Tom Haward and BP Jum's anything that needs to be left in its original state .
Also a BP Jum I finished up yesterday.
