Hello I purchased a really cheap Vintage Kaywoodie 22 Y from ebay a couple of weeks ago in hopes of giving it a shot of healthy restoration. I figured it is dirt cheap, will allow me to fully strip the pipe down, remove the cake etc as a fun hobby experience much like others here on the forums, and show their craftsmanship. Keep in mind that I am not a do-it-yourself sort of fellow, I am a programmer by trade. Anyway, I have stripped this thing down to nearly nothing but bare brier. Removed every bit of cake from the bowl etc. What really gets me is how wonderful this pipe smells! As I began polishing the tenon i noticed the smell. It smells like cinnamon and smells absolutely delicious! Once i started removing all the cake the wonderful smell filled the room. Simply a great experience for my first restore. Makes me wonder what stories this pipe could tell and made me wonder what sort of person smoked this pipe; created an imaginary friend who smoked a really nice smelling pipe :) Hope to get some before and after photos posted here real soon.

I just went through that as well. A new estate I am restoring smelt incredible as I was cleaning it.
Unfortunately as it turned out, there was a large deposit of aro gunk in the stem causing that sweet smell....hours of alcohol, pipe cleaners, and q tips later it still has a faint smell but most of it is gone haha.
But on the bright side, it's better to work on a good smellin pipe than a stinky one I guess

Every pipe I tried to restore so far came smelling really awesome, like someone smoked nothing but a light aro such as 1-Q in it.

You guys are extremely lucky! All but one of the estates I've bought has come with a reeking, lakeland ghost that took severe cleaning and the most powerful latbombs in my arsenal to get rid of!
