Hello All,
As a relative pipe newb, I've yet to spring for a new high-end pipe. I'm on a budget, so a good portion of my collection is made up of estates. The only problem is often these are from makers I've never heard of.
My latest acquisition is a chunky rusticated briar stamped "Gold Star 8587 President". From what little I can find on the web Gold Star was a second line from Sasieni and President might refer to the stain/rusticated finish. Beyond that, not much else came up. I'm also not sure what to call the shape. Squat Rhodesian? Dunno...
Any info would be much appreciated.
Cheers,

Jake.

That is very interesting, I've not seen a Gold Star before. They are listed as a Sasieni 2nd, but that is not a shape from the Sasieni shape chart.
I'd say it is more than of a Diplomat shape to my eye.
Your picture links were a bit funky, they had both the Photobucket and web url insertion commands, I fixed them so the links work.

Thanks for the welcome gents!
Monk, the pipe is actually not as stubby as it looks in the pictures. It's almost as long as most others in my collection. I appreciate the advice tho. Sometimes I still puff too aggresively and my full size pipes get awfully warm.
Ssjones, thanks for clarifying the shape and fixing my pics. I took a look at images of diplomat pipes and I can see the difference. Mine definitely has more "chin" than a Rhodesian.
All considered I'm quite happy with it. The shank and stem are quite wide and there were no teeth marks on the bit. There was some cake in the bowl which was easy to remove before I gave it a salt/booze treatment. Not bad for $25 CAD.
Jake.
