Are there any Tobaccos that demand much higher prices than usual Tinned Tobaccos on line. A close friend of mine is turning 90 and has enjoyed his Pipe for many many years. He probably would be happy with a pouch of Captain Black but I thought I would find him a real treat. He enjoys most tobaccos. Any suggestions from you fine folks?

Any Esoterica Tobaccos, any McClelland Tobacco due to being no longer in production, most Straight Virginia’s with several years of aging, Samuel Gawith blends, especially aged tobaccos….. The Esoterica Tobaccos are always “out of stock,” as are Samuel Gawith’s tins.

I should have also noted that being a new member (much like me), you will probably not receive a copious amount of information in reference to the specific identity of blends in direct response to your question. The only reason being, it has been determined in the past, some persons join these types of forums with the single intent to obtain the information you requested with the sole purpose of subsequently making a considerable profit from same. Your very broad but specific question (“any”), coupled with it being for a 89 year old friend, most of whom at that age, in my experience, are set in their ways and you couldn’t pay them to enjoy anything other than what they’ve been smoking for the past four decades, might cast doubt on your intentions with an innocuous inquiry. It is extremely unfortunate that a couple of nefarious, former “new members” have caused these types of “suspicious thoughts” to even take place in such a professional and friendly forum. I have received nothing but generous advice and input in my brief time as a member. I assure you, without question, that you will too.

In my opinion, I would take the excellent advice of #mortonbriar for your friend’s impending birthday gift. Casually inquire, so as not to tip-him-off, as to his “favorite” blend of yesteryear (or whenever), and I am certain you will find a plethora of useful/helpful information pertaining to his favorite(s) and whether it could still be obtained and/or an extremely close match by the more educated/experienced Ladies and Gentleman of this forum.

I wish you well in your search, and a very happy birthday to your friend!

Hi, I'm a total rookie, but what got me hooked was Sutliff's 2021 Christmas Cringle Flake. It was my first VaPer and hit me like an amazing Burgundy wine with its complexity. Sour, with plum and other ripe fruit. That was it for me. It's hard to find, but if you can get a tin, it would be a great gift for your friend.

If he often smokes pouch tobacco, but you want to upgrade a little for him, I think two pouches of two different Amphora blends, like burley and Virginia or English, might fill the bill, or the original aromatic, if you think he'd like that. It's made by MacBaren and certainly a step up from Captain Black in my book.

Captain Black Grape… A lot of people like to goof on it, but it’s really pretty good as far as I’m concerned.

And buying a Lamborghini for someone who lives on a farm with dirt and gravel roads all around, well they’re not going to find much use for it…

If he likes English, ask him if he’s ever smoked any Syrian Latakia blends when Syrian Latakia was around.

There are so many great blends out there, but here’s a few to hunt for.

Mac Baren: HH Vintage Syrian
McCelland: Blue Mountain
Samuel Gawith: Squadron Leader (Older ages are sweeter)
