I’m assuming most are aware of Mimmo.

It’s my understanding he’s the best when it comes to briar, The Master.

For those that don’t know Mimmo, here’s some info.

For almost two years I have been trying to find carvers/companies using Mimmo’s briar, and not an easy task either.

Gheppo is the only one I know that uses Mimmo’s briar.

I received an email today from Gheppo, telling me they still make pipes and they still use Mimmo’s briar.

The Dublino I is next on my radar purchase! Listen up PAD Junkies, please don’t swipe one before I get a chance to get one! LOL ?

If anyone has a pipe using Mimmo’s briar or a pipe from Gheppo, please share your thoughts... Thanks :)

A majority of your common artisans are using Mimmo for their Italian briar. Regularly carried by a number of US based briar suppliers that many purchase from plus those that have more direct lines for their supply.

Of course I don’t know every carver out there, but I have certainly run across a lot in the last few years, and I’ve never seen any of them advertise using Mimmo’s briar, except Gheppo. I’m assuming if Mimmo is the master here, then it seems like really good information carvers would advertise about... hmm ?

I think anyone who is informed enough would dig that info out. I think even most people buying an expensive pipe that the name means nothing to them. Unless it does and if it does they're the kind of people that ask questions. Notice how rare it is to see it advertised by type of briar with any pipe these days?

The pipe world is certainly vast, and with the article, ‘The Myth of Brand and Maker in Pipesmoking’, by Dr. Hanna, it certainly makes you ponder.

So then I think, where does Mimmo stand in the world of pipes.

If you look at retail business as a whole, geared towards consumers, when you have something special, you usually advertise it.

and the proof is also in the pudding according to some. If a persons briar has the qualities a carver is looking for they'll buy it. I mean look at furniture they don't tell you who they bought the wood from but they know where to get the wood that is most likely to grab your eye or last or whatever.

Buying wood, I see this point, makes sense. I guess I wasn’t looking at pipes in the same way, like a wooden table. hmm ?

I can’t say, when you consider the world of wood, compared to pipes/briar, hmm, if there is really any other world of wood with such a rich long history as the Briar History and pipes.

Living in Hawaii, Koa certainly has a rich long history, and it certainly revolves, a lot of it, around it’s beauty.

Koa Ukuleles have been made since the 1800s and Kamaka, my understanding is one of, if not the oldest maker of Koa Ukuleles.

I’ve been in email communication with Danilo Gheppo this past week. I came to learn, he told me, that his job is a briarcutter working for Mimmo.

I love learning the world of pipes, and thought this was something special. ❤️

He only makes 30-40 pipes a year when he has the time.

Here’s a picture of Danilo Gheppo working at Mimmo’s, taken from his site, he told me about this pic, which he also sent me.

Lots and lots of people use Mimmo's briar. I mean, go to romeobriar.it or whatever the hell his website is and order some. It's no big deal.

Nor is it the be-all-end-all of briar. I've got briar in my shop from Mimmo from 10 years ago, it's lovely. I've got briar in my shop from Makis from 10 years ago. It's wonderful. I've got briar in my shop from Jaume in Spain from 10 years ago. It's great.

Like... literally Mimmo is the only guy anyone outside of pipe carvers has heard of, and to be sure, he is a great cutter. But there's not a man alive who could smoke a pipe and say for sure that it was Mimmo's mill vs the Manno mill, for example. Not a chance in hell you could tell them apart in smoking them.

Mimmo's good name as a cutter is now being used as a sales ploy by pipe makers. "Oh this is Mimmo briar." because pipe smokers lick this shit up. OH MY GOD IT MUST BE GOOD.

Mimmo's a wicked good dude, gregarious, friendly, knowledgeable, generous. His briar is great. Tons of people and companies use it. But the idea that a pipe is somehow naturally better because the briar was processed by this mill or that mill.... total bullshit, I'm sorry.
