So I always remember my grandma brushing her teeth with baking soda and I always thought it was gross. Well the other day I finished smoking a pipe and went to brush my teeth and realized that I had left my toothpaste at my brothers house where I had spent the night earlier. I had a box of baking soda so I decided to give it a shot. Many of you have heard about or tried this, some of you maybe have not. My experience was that it tasted like nothing really, maybe a little salty. It wasnt gritty like I thought it would be. As I was brushing I was thinking of all the odor fighting properties that baking soda had. I brushed tongue thoroughly and about an hour after I had brushed I realized that I could no longer taste or smell tobacco on my breath.
Been brushing with it ever since, teeth feel cleaner. I think i'm done with toothpaste.

Hmm...my $9 tube of toothpaste has baking soda in it...and my fridge has a $0.79 box of baking soda in it...good call! You can also add a little hydrogen peroxide to it for a super scrub.

I've heard of this before, but never tried it because it's supposed to hurt pretty bad if you have sinsitive teeth...like this guy. Have you noticed any sensitivity?

@Romeo you do have to switch the baking soda every month or so, but yes 75 cents a shot is great.
@Kyle everything that I have seen has said it was safe. I have not noticed any sensitivity issues and I do have sensitive teeth. Like I said I had expected it to be gritty like salt would be but it is like normal brushing with paste.
The odor elimination its especially noticeable when brushing your tongue and roof of your mouth. My gf loves it lol

The baking soda is in your toothpaste in small amounts because large amounts will eat the enamel off of your teeth causing them to be more sensitive and you will get cavities easier. Basking soda is great if your in a pinch or really need clean breath for some occasion, but constant use is not recommended.
Source: I asked my dentist a few years back.

Ya mate. Baking Soda is good stuff, but bear in mind that it is harsh on your teeth. Will cause early eroding etc. You still need the good stuff in toothpaste. I use Pro-namel twice a day. Also brush and rinse sometimes with peroxide. By the way, I am 48 yrs old and have never had a cavity or filling. Still have all my original teeth and have never had a toothache.

I use colgate whitening toothpaste and then follow it up with listerine whitening mouthwash. the mouthwash tastes foul and foams in your mouth but it really works, it has got a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in it. freshens breath and cleans teeth - perfect.

:laughat: Gwynclan! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has done it!
I'll give baking soda a try for my tongue and roof of my mouth, because i do get bad breath, but I doubt I'd use it exclusively.

One thing, as yet not mentioned...

Hydration.

Dehydration, will manifests itself (in-part)with a dryish mouth and a lot of the other less than desirable aromatic aspects.

Brushing with baking soda can cause some long-term problems owing to its abrasive qualities.

I dont even know what kind of toothpaste I brush with. The girlfriend buys it and I dont ask questions
On another note though, I do pay close attention to the kind of mouthwash that I use, and have recently started using alcohol free mouthwash. I have to say that I have had 0 cases of tongue bite since using the alcohol free stuff. I think this may be another factor of tongue bite that most people dont consider. You may not necessarily be smoking too fast, but if you use an alcohol based mouthwash, it could wind up making the lining of your mouth and your tongue more raw than it should be. Bottom line: alcohol free mouthwash. Great stuff.

I don't recall any tube of toothpaste costing $9 lol Does it have gold flakes in it too?
To help get rid of the bad breath thing I just drink a glass or two of water. After that you should have a faint "coffee" like smell about your breath.
I would NEVER brush right after an hour long bowl. That hurts like a biatch.

You bullies have scared me about brushing my teeth with baking soda lol.
Anyway this morning I brushed with regular tooth paste and the my tongue and roof with baking soda. Best of both worlds I assume. I think it did the trick.

Suggestion:
Two birds with one stone. Fill pipe with tobacco. Tamp down well. Sprinkle a bit of baking soda onto tobacco.

Light up and enjoy a great smoke and wonderful breath!

OK Ladies! Here's the trick... Throw your head back, squirt in some lighter fluid, lite it and gargle.

Gets rid of all the nasties and impresses kids too! HaHaaa

I would be scared to lose the enamel off of my teeth, but I guess they made dentures for a reason :D and as far as I can remember my grandma never complained about her dentures!

Maybe you could treat the baking soda like a big pipe clean; brush everyday with tooth paste and then once a month or so just use baking soda and some peroxide.

Ok this may sound weird and the first time you try it it will be freaking weird. It is called oil pulling.
1 Tbs. cold pressed oil. Olive, sesame, or just good old cooking oil.
Yea put it in your mouth and swish it around as long as you can stand it. A few minuets to 5 min. Spit it out and brush with baking soda.
I know it sounds crazy but it works.
