We all know which General this pipe is being attributed to so let’s cut to the chase.

I have always wanted this pipe. General MacArthur is a legend.

For those of you who own this pipe how do you like it? How does it smoke?

I have not tried that pipe. The deepest has been the MM General. Surely you will not be disappointed. I don't like so much depth of burner. The cobs give you a cool smoke, (aroma) especially with virginias. But that's a personal opinion, from my experience with cobs.

There's the General which is deep and then there's the MacArthur which is like the pipe seen in those famous photographs. Which one are you referring to?

You could do a lot worse for 20 bucks. I dont own cobs but so far as cobs go its a sharp looking pipe. I like the look of the General better than the Macarthur. The Mac is a tad extreme for my taste but its there if you want the real deal.

I was at the MM factory store and I discovered that I don't own a tamper long enough to get to the bottom of a MacArthur cob. I bought two of the General pipes and have dedicated one of them to Virginia blends. They have the largest volume chambers of any of my pipes, and they smoke cool and lovely.

When I didn't smoke pipe, I thought that was a deep pipe. Now I know how pipe works, that's just a half pint.

Erm 🫤 iirc it was called “The General” and I assumed they were referring to MacArthur.
See the post below this one for the two MacArthur pipes.

The one called the General pictured below is certainly also a nod to MacArthur but less in the shape of the pipe we think of in those famous photos.

Any links for that information?
If it could be verified, then it would not be a "nod to McArthur". It would just be named for the guy. To nod is to insinuate with ways other than blatantly saying it. And, someone's assertions are valid. Even in just a "nod" it could be that MM company named it General, because they intended it to just be a general pipe as in "every day" multi-use pipe. But, the design seems to indicate that it wouldn't be very practical for that for the majority of customers. So, it makes more sense that it is a nod to McArthur.

It was just an assumption by me because of MacArthur's rank and the size of the pipe. But I like Michael's explanation too.

It could be verified by asking MM.
Sure, then ask them, since it seems to matter more to you than the rest of us.
It's often one of their most sold out models.
That doesn't mean that it is the most versatile of their pipes. It also doesn't mean that it is the most sold pipe. It could mean that the corn cobs become harder to find for that particular shape. Once you get MM on the phone, ask them about that, ha ha.

I don't like pipes of such a long size, for smoking virginias. I like a relatively small pipe, a MM Diplomat, Cobbler, for example. The MM General I use for some latakia blends, and aromatics, like Amphora full, St. Bruno........I wouldn't buy a pipe either, just because someone famous smoked it, the marketing is a very veteran flautist player.pied-piper-meaning.jpg
