I am considering on purchasing a GBD Sablee Standard Pipe made in the 50's or 60's. It is a Sandblasted Billiard and the price is 75.00. It seems as if it is a good buy to me, but I would still like some feedback. What are your thoughts?
Hook:
I was lucky enough back in the mid 70's to buy a couple of low brow GBD models: a New Standard and an Ebony. Today, they're still among my best smokers. Everything else I've learned about Ganeval, Boundier and Donninge has come from the following website: http://www.perardua.net/pipes/GBDlines.html and http://pipedia.org/index.php?title=GBD
I'm just playing devil's advocate here so please don't shoot the guy asking questions. What makes you think that this Sablee is from the 50's or 60's?
Fnord
As always with buying an estate pipe the price depends on the condition, the $70 mark would be a bit to much here in England unless it was in perfect condition, I know there is a lot of GBD collectors in the USA, this can drive up the price.
Fnord - The guy I am buying it from has said that it was from the 50's or 60's. He is a very trusted man in the pipe world as well, so I am just going by his word on his website.
I don't care for bent pipes, but that is a very nice GBD... Go for it you will not be disappointed. They are cool smokers, and better briar than is available at that price, or twice that new today.
