I snagged a few tins of St James Flake to cellar and noticed only 3 of the 8 feel concave like they are holding a vacuum. Pretty sure the other 5 lost their seal.
Does anyone have recommendations on how to cellar the ones that aren’t sealed? I am thinking I can use my vacuum sealer to put the tin inside pouches but I know the food saver bags aren’t perfect. I appreciate any suggestions other than smoke it all right now. 😁

I'm not as absolutist as some (i.e. straight to mason jar).

Get mylar bags and vac seal if you want longer term storage (over 5 years).

If you are just not sure, and not geared up iwth mylar, food saver vac seal the tin (each one separately) and call it good. date the bags and plan to open them one after another, say up to 5 years or so...

If you know YOU are going to smoke it eventually open the questionable tins and jar them up in proper mason jars (or the same mylar vac seal solution).

i haven't been able to compare time of food saver sealed tins vs other methods over time (yet) but my thinking is along the lines of the food saver plastic: 1) isn't there to be a perfect vapor barrier, it is there to hold the lid down better so it has a better chance to properly do it's job, and 2) still performs as a limiting barrier to minimize gas exchange if the tin seal is faulty.

I suppose gas under pressure from fermentation will (more slowly?) escape than it would from mylar but don't know how much a factor that is.

Don't plan on the square tins to be a retirement asset. Smoke 'em up!

Whether you trnsfer to jars or Mylar is up to you, b ut if you decided to use Mylar, be sure that it's metallized Mylar, not clear Mylar. Metallized Mylar is impermeable, so it will preserve your contents for decades. Clear Mylar is quite permeable and contents will completely dry out.

If these blends are something that you will be smoking up in a couple of years, small jars will serve you best.

Try to pull the lids off. If they lost their seal you shouldn't have too much trouble prying the off with your own fingers. That said, if you are unsure or wanna be safe, mylar or jarring them are your best bet.
