So about a month ago, I was talking to one of the tobacconists at Peretti's about Lakeland blends which led me to buying my first ounce of Ennerdale. After showing me the Ennerdale, he pulled out another jar of a G&H blend I can't remember the name of and said that it was dressed with tonquin bean. It smelled amazing, yet I didn't buy any of it. I've been thinking about that smell ever since.
I did some research online about which blends are flavored with tonquin bean. The first one I went for was SG 1792 flake. I thought I was going to get an overwhelming vanilla-like flavor from the tonquin bean. Instead, I got the taste and smell of cigars, decomposing earth and a vitamin N dose the could tranquilize a horse. It's great, to put it another way :D
I figured I would spring for the G&H scented brown flake next because I could remember seeing a jar of it at the shop. I recently finished my first bowl and still don't feel like I've tasted tonquin bean. There was a lot of flowery, strange lakeland essence like there is in Ennerdale but no "aha! tonquin bean" moment.
Doing more investigating online, I realize that tobaccoreviews lists 3 different G&H brown flake blends: scented, unscented and aromatic. At first I thought this was a mistake and that scented and aromatic were the same. If you go to the web pages for each blend, you will notice that they describe aromatic brown flake as being flavored with fruit, citrus and vanilla like Ennerdale whereas scented brown flake is flavored with maple, licorice and tonquin bean.
Are there really three different brown flakes? Am I smoking scented brown or aromatic brown? The bag (and jar at the shop) says scented brown. Did they get them mixed up? I would appreciate hearing your opinion.
