Well , all my pipes (10) are most brand new (recently did get rid off all my older pipes'')now even these pipes are pretty good of a quality,at least that how they semm to me( in reality all these are med priced mediocre nowadays Peterson and Italian Made Stanwell+Savinellis and one of a Rattray )most all of them tend to get pretty hot regardless of how slow I do smoke, didnt get no cake to build up inside yet - I thing I must keep smoking half bowls(how long yet?) and not full ones ,+ eventually I'm gettin to realize these straight virginia flakes might turn to be a Real tongue burners, even though,I do like these tobacco types initial fragrant, yet a slight sweet taste spectrum.Perhaps I should mix a bit burley or perique tobaccos in them? For instance a straight virginia flake Capstan Navy Gold seem be more bitey than that Orlik Golden sliced brand. Also I find English mixtures being less bitey, though, cant get used to that Latakia punchy flavor, next in line are> Orientals and Burleys,Ok so much for this issue.

I'm convinced it's the smoking technique more than the pipes or blends. Although some blends require much more work than others to not overheat your pipe, I can't see this being the case here. Just to be sure you can pickup a smooth blend like Early Morning Pipe, make sure it's fairly dry and just sip on a loose packed bowl. The trick to sipping is to take long slow draws off the pipe and pace the frequency of the draw. There should be no billows of smoke and the pipe will probably go out on its own. If so take a few extra minutes before relighting. The key to a tasty smoke is a cool smoke. At least the sipping technique works for me. Also avoid overly moist tobacco, it's just not worth it. Be patient enough to let it dry out. It's amazing how seemingly dry tobacco can still contain enough moisture to burn somewhat wet.
Be relaxed and enjoy. Don't count the relights!

I had a devil of a time slowing down. Slowing down in both the preparation of the pipe and the smoking. Intellectually, I grasped it. In practice, I had to concentrate on practicing. I have been rewarded!

A pipe bowl is a fire pit, basically, so it's bound to heat up some. I have found over the years that I prefer sandblasted or rusticated pipes with thick bowls relative to the chamber, as they tend to feel cooler in the hand. Most of my smooth-finish pipes are also thick-bowled (bulldogs and rhodesians) but I have a couple smooth billiards. I also tend to either clench or else hold the pipe by the shank, with my middle finger underneath and forefinger over the top. Probably comes from being a cigar smoker. So I don't always notice the temperature of the outside of the bowl.
If you're talking about the smoke temperature being too hot, not the pipe itself, then that's a function of how fast you're puffing. I happen to prefer a goodly amount of smoke in each puff, not just a faint wisp, thus I prefer blends that give me that without having to puff like a bellows.

Most tobaccos are tinned at the factory with extra moisture, and so careful drying is called for if you're burning too hot. It may seem counter-intuitive, but moist tobacco burns hotter than drier tobacco. (Of course it can be overdone, and then you start ramping up the heat scale if it's too dry.)

Shutterbugg, have you tried Lane Burley & Black bulk? Not only is it cheap in price but it's a creamy nutty great smoke. If you smoke a hot pipe like I do, you can bellow this blend like a freight train with absolutely no tongue bite. Goes great with a mug of coffee!!
Can't say that I have, but tobaccoreviews lists it as "very mild" (you don't see that often!) and Jim in his review said it has almost no nicotene. For me at least that's enough to not want to try it. Personal preference, but I like to taste whatever tobacco I'm smoking unadulterated, therefore if I drink anything while smoking it is plain water.

All Right Dear ladies and Gentlemen, Thank you again so much sharing your opinions and giving me a deeper insight to this matter, very informative discussion, yet my special thanks go to mr Cortez for finding time to suggest those light Virginia perique blends, yes I wont argue the Capstan Navy Gold aint much bitey but can get somewhat harsh and very citrusy, had a devil of a time with these no matured young viriginias, the worst brand being Mc Barens Virginia nro 1)nevertheless am not thinking giving them(virginias) up at least as this point, but now I shall smoke them less frquantly than in past summer, giving a try for American Burleyblends and Belgium Semois tobaccos(happen to like stong Italian and Kentucky cigars and do smoke them frequantly )those coarse cut(OTC?)Burleys might be easier to smoke than those flake form tobaccos, but somehow I'm feelig I cant do without Virginia perique,so will keep rotating. In the future,if these virginia tobaccos would keep biting and make my pipes hot- will stop smoking them,we shall see if this happens down the road.Have a Great Day

Get in there and move your baccy around with ur finger. Just don't suck on it like a machine. Make weird faces With your lips when u puff. Slow down. Pay attention to your mouth and your pipe.and learn. It's the only way.

Most folks start by trying to smoke a pipe at the same cadence they would smoke a cigar or cigarette.
Half that pace is still too fast.
A while ago DM posted that once he changed his thought process from burning tobacco to roasting it, everything became clear.

It's all technique, every one of my pipes will smoke hot if I'm puffing too fast, cake or not. Also Macbaren Va #1 is notorious for being a biting blend from everything I've read. Also the general consensus seems to be most people overthink breaking in pipes, just smoke them full and they'll break in overtime.

Learning to smoke slowly takes time. So do not worry about that for now. As far as smoking hot is concerned. DO NOT BUY Mild or Medium strength blends as you will tend to smoke them faster for satisfaction. Instead buy strong (full) blends so you get the nic hit and flavor profile with small short puffs.
AVOID Virginia dominant / Aromatic blends. Instead try English/Oriental blends which burns slow and low.
Mac Baren Old Dark Fired / Dark Strong Kentucky are good for strong blends.
Try full flavored blends but with less nicotine as well so you can analyze what you crave more, the strength (nicotine) or the body (taste).
GL Pease blends like Quiet Nights, Abingdon for example have really full bodies and they also deliver a nice nicotine hit. SixPence is a medium blend which I also suggest to you. Westminster is the quintessential English I always suggest to new pipe smokers.
Use matches and avoid lighters, dont overburn your leaf and dont let the fire touch the tobacco directly.
Hope my comments help.
Cheers,

Chris

All other factors aside, I've always found a new, un-broken-in pipe to smoke hotter than I'd like. You might try sticking to one pipe for several smokes and see if the situation seems to improve with that particular pipe.
