Hey guys just felt like posting a couple flea market finds that I recently acquired.
First is a Peterson Dunmore. The lady wanted $10 for it and I was more than happy to pay it. Stem is a bit oxidized but its in pretty decent shape. The bowl is quite narrow but also pretty deep, I think It'll make for a good flake pipe. The other thing I came home with isn't a pipe but just about the tiniest little hatchet bit I've ever seen. I have no idea what this could have been used for. The thing is sharp as hell though and feels like its made of good steel. Can anyone here shed some light on this little tool?
Also, not sure if this was the right subforum for this...just trying to kill two birds with one stone...
The pics!

I have used a tool similar to that before you actually mount a handle that runs entirely through the hole not just out one side like a hatchet or axe would. and then use it to scrape hides for tanning. although the last time I saw one I was using the one out of another guys toolbox because he was teaching me to skin, tan and butcher deer.

His was also pretty old so it may have been intended for something else and he set it up himself because he figured it would work.
btw nice pipe let us know how it smokes when you get her fixed up

After reading your post, my initial impression was that your friends tool was put together by him as I've never seen any skinning tool like this little thing. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it smokes!

Thanks! I thought they were decent finds too! Unfortunately there are no markings that I can see on the bit.
That little hatchet blade looks like it was handmade by a blacksmith. I'm thinking it might have been used for kindling, kept handy near the kitchen wood stove, maybe.
Kind of what i was thinking too but I'm just not sure!

Two great finds, pal. A Peterson for ten bucks? Nice.
The hatchet head is just swell. Butchering or kindling, who knows? But it's slick.

Tell me about it! I couldn't really believe it. It's the cheapest pete I've seen that wasn't beat to hell.

Love the Pete. Don't know about the hatchet but it would look cool on the shelf. Good find!

rothnh is right. That little hatchet is used to split lighter'd pine (fatwood) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatwood at the

stove. It only takes a couple slivers to start a fire of hard wood. My grandmother used to have one in the kitchen.

I use a draw knife to cleanup hides for tanning.... Much easier to control.
