Does anybody else’s lighter just kinda randomly turn into a flame thrower at times? Is it when the butane is getting low? I don’t have the flame setting that high.

I'm no expert but I believe you have a defective valve that regulates the gas. If it's not an expensive lighter I would just trash it.
Sometimes happens with my Pearl lighter, but never with the Old Boy.
I don't see it as a great problem, it settles down after a bit of adjustment.

Yeah it's when it's getting low. Happens really badly when the lighter isn't bled well before filling. Beattie's just do that though. ?
Yeah another vote for low gas, right before it runs out etc.
I got tired of dealing with refills, bleeding etc and am using good old bic's.
I'll just stick with straight pipes to avoid burning my thumb..

Too much air in the chamber when the gas gets low. Bleed the tank thoroughly before refilling.
I had the same exact lighter. Bought it from ebay because I thought it looked nice and was the one stop shop with built in poker/tamper/spoon. That lighter turned flame thrower in the first month and tossed it. I have tried a few of similar design and they just can't match my ol boy. good luck
Years ago I tried them all. DuPont, Dunhill, Savinelli, Colibri etc. etc.. They all work good at first but eventually they fail. I've said it before. Spend your money on good pipes and when it comes to lighters buy cheap disposables. 
Ya, i have the same problem. Especially when its gas is running low.
