So recently I purchased a WGM meerschaum pipe and found the draw to be wonderful, a nice open smooth draw. I received for Christmas 2014 a Servi-meerschaum from my mother that is a nice little pipe and my first meerschaum, but the draw was restrictive to say the least. While I enjoyed the flavor from this meerschaum the draw kept me from smoking it very often. I decided to fix the draw as I found the WGM draw to be a pleasure.
I knew the restriction was in the screw tennon as I could see a lip inside of it. I have a Senior Pipe Remear that has a handheld drill bit in the handle. So I took that bit and reamed out the lip in the screw tennon, not completely as I suspect the lip provides some structural integrity. I did this twice and removed enough that it now has a nice smooth open draw! It does not whistle, which I was worried about, and seems to retain the structural integrity needed. I was very careful to drill straight in and out of the tennon to reduce whistling possibilites. I have smoked this pipe for about two bowls a day for about a week. The fix works very well!
I have not read in the forum about this fix, but have read that others have an issue with meerschaum pipes having a restrictive draw. So thought I would share my field expedient fix for the issue. Some pictures below illustrate my fix.
