I typed this up already and there was some sort of error when posting, so I'm going to try again. Hopefully I don't make a second thread, but this site is slightly wonky and I still need to learn it's nuances. So, this time I'll keep it even shorter. Today I received my first ever haul of tins from the postman. I'm extremely excited and I need YOUR help to decide which of these to pop first. Also, considering the fact that I smoke only one bowl a day, is it okay to pop multiple tins to smoke from, or should I enjoy one complete tin at a time until I get some jars for cellaring? So, attached is an image of the haul, and I will be opening one within the next few hours sooooo...GO!

Can't go wrong with plum pudding SR. One of my absolute favorite tobaccos. I'll make that my official vote!
Really you can't fuck up though, everything you have there is good. I haven't had star of the east though, so no opinion there.
I would get the jars for cellaring as soon as possible, even with just the one tin open. It gives you that much more control over your moisture level, and in addition, if you don't like the tin you open, you may like it very much after you let it sit for six months, particularly with your orlik. This experience is not uncommon at all, so you may want to jar it right away and move on to the next one.
Jarring would also allow you to try each of your new blends in rapid succession rather than working your way through one tin.

Embers, are you hinting that I should smoke them all? Haha. I figured it was either that or you fixed the image in my post...If your response was the latter, could you explain why my image doesn't show up for me but I see the one in your post? Also, alaskanpiper, thank you for the advice about cellaring! I'll have to get some jars as soon as possible!

Well, yeah.
Embers, your new avatar looks even more dead than your last one.
Had to update to include my newest income killer. For some reason, that avatar was a pain to put together. Alignment on a phone screen is tedious!

So far it seems like Plum Pudding Special Reserve is in the lead! I'm getting anxious, so I'm going to crack the winning tin in precisely one hour and two minutes! Keep em' coming, and thanks for all of the responses!

I, too, would go with Plum Pudding Special Reserve...it is a fine smoke and if you like it, you should get a tin of Bengal Slices...not the white the regular...black tin not the white.

I would also recommend rotating blends, as I try to switch it up myself every day (or so, depending) BUT, when I'm first starting to get to know a blend for the first time, I like to focus solely on that blend for a while. It's hard to pick out some flavors of some of the more subtle tobacco's when every other smoke its different. As for your question of if you should pop open everything all at once, I personally wouldn't. Unless you think you will be able to finish the tin(s) in a couple of weeks then I'd just wait till you can jar the rest. I dont think it makes a huge difference either way, I've kept tins open for over a month with no I'll effects, but when it comes to good tobacco I would rather be safe than sorry and now just jar all my tobacco as soon I pop it open.

For me, the more I smoke it, and the more of it exists in a blend, the less the special nature of Latakia comes through. I find I appreciate Latakia more when I am almost taste-shocked by its flavor and pungency if that makes any sense. It sounds weirder trying to articulate it in writing than it does in my head. So I like to alternate genres.

I alternate too. But more because I like variety and don’t want to be away from any one type for any period of time, hahaha. Maybe thats why I never tire of Latakia. Right now if I had to live with one blend type forever though it would surely be english.

Like you, I only recently started buying tinned tobacco. I’ve been collecting pipes for decades, but I’ve only been smoking them occasionally and had a ‘pig in the poke’ attitude toward tins, choosing pipe shop blends instead since I could smell and even taste them in the shop before deciding how many ounces of which I would take home with me.

Tinder Box’s Black Russian blend has been my favorite for years, but now that I’m smoking more, I’ve been experimenting with different tinned tobaccos, especially since the quality pipe shops have been getting few and far between. I think that you’ll enjoy your Plum Pudding, having just finished my first tin of it as well.

So I decided to pop open the Plum Pudding Special Reserve as suggested, and I was thoroughly impressed. All I’ve smoked before that was a few shop blends and some 1-Q. I must admit that I prefer the deeper flavor of the PPSR than my aromatic blends. The experience overall opened up my mind to realize how different each kind of tobacco is. I simply cannot wait to try the other blends that I have procured. I managed to find two half pint wide mouth jars in which I cellared the majority of the PPSR and all but one bowl of the Orlik Golden Sliced, which I will be sampling later on this evening. I knew that there were different types of tobaccos and different cuts but physically having them now truly is eye opening. Now, if only I could find some gentlemen in my area to enjoy my smoke with...I’m stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, if anyone from this board lives around that area.
On a side note, why doesn’t my profile picture show up? When I go to my account settings it shows up but not in these posts. Also, the photo that I posted in my original post doesn’t show up. Am I doing something wrong? This forum board seems a bit outdated and finicky, but I suppose I just need to learn the system better. It will come in time, so please pardon my ignorance. Happy piping!

Following your whim is the point. When you get to the Orlik Golden Sliced, it's a quiet Virginia smoke but nicely nuanced and widely enjoyed. It's supposed to have Perique, but it is done with a light touch.

Scroll down to the bottom of this page where it says, Members Online Now," and click on your name. Add it there and it should show up. Had the same problem myself.
I really like Orlik Golden Sliced. It was the first VA-based blend, VAPer and flake I ever had, and I think it's a perfect introduction. It's also relatively affordable and available everywhere.
I'm not familiar with your area, but you're close to tobacco country, so hopefully there are some shops and other places you might meet smoking buddies. I don't think you're too far from the Smoking Pipes HQ and they have a retail shop down near Myrtle Beach, I think.
