So I have recently acquired a Missouri meerschaum patriot corn cob pipe. Along with it I got a tin of Dunhill Nightcap (I know this may sound ridiculous, and this is not a troll post, this is 100% legitimate and I can post pictures if need be). I had heard through my researching tobaccos a lot about Nightcap so I figured I would give it a shot. I am planning on smoking some before bed tomorrow. Will I be fine if I start with nightcap or should I seek something more mild out?

Nightcap is a great baccy, BUT I'd go with Carter Hall or a different Burley blend. Burley is as forgiving as it gets. I'd definitely give a go though. Keep posting and viewing, there's a ton of good info here.

As I started interest in pipe tobacco I started taking more of a look around me. I heard alot about Carter Hall and actually spotted it in a local grocery store. I bought it all but one pouch. It's fantastic. Great smoke. Good burn and nutty flavor. And sincerely good wife note . It's a good starting point. Try some .

Nightcap is pretty robust with Vitamin N. Be sure to eat first if you are new to the pipe and stop at the first signs of stomach discomfort (if it occurs.) Nightcap is a great smoke...enjoy it!

Nightcap, Ramsgate and Ratrays Red Rap were the first tobaccos I tried. I didn't know how to smoke a pipe properly and all three blends were major fails for me. I got wicked tongue bite. Horrible taste etc...
I like these tobaccos now that I learned to smoke MUCH SLOWER...
Ashdigger makes a good point when he says Carter Hill is much more forgiving.
If you do start with the nightcap... sip your pipe. Smoke patiently. It is very good stuff.

My advice is to realize that there is often a period of time and experience required for you to learn to taste the goodies.

Especially as a newbie, it might be best to keep smoking one tolerable blend, regardless of which it is you choose to start with until you have sussed out its typical taste attributes. It takes some time for your palate and tongue to become 'conditioned'.

Of course, adding in a bowl of another blend for contrast can be helpful, but patience and repetition with one 'good' blend is my advice.

+1 on the Carter Hall.

NIghtcap is an all time favorite, however not sure if I would recommend for a first time smoker. Personally I would chose a milder blend, and wouldn't shy away from aromatics either. Try www.tobaccoreview.com and look up the various blends available at your local tobacco store .. see what appeals to you. I suppose that pipe smoking takes a lot of educating one self, but it is also quite a bit of trial and error as well.

I'd save the tin of Nightcap for a year or so, if you haven't opened it, or put it in a canning jar and seal it, if you have opened it. Learn to smoke a pipe with milder blends. There are hundreds, but those mentioned in earlier posts, like Carter Hall, are mild and low nicotine. You can learn to smoke more easily with milder blends. I'd buy only pouches (or one or two ounces if bought in bulk/baggies). That will allow you to try around and you won't be stuck with quantities of tobacco you don't like. You might want to jar anything you don't like and try it again later as your tastes mature. Other mild blends include Prince Albert, Iwan Ries Three Star Blue, or Lanes 1Q, all available in pouches or small quantities in bulk. Welcome aboard. Feel free with questions; people here can offer help and interesting opinions. And sometimes a few uninteresting opinions.

Sorry about that mate, I think I have typoed the url for the website i was recommending. It is actually www.tobaccoreviews.com (as in plural) - in the browse section you can find a complete tobacco brand list (huge), and for each individual blend there are helpful reviews, ratings and so on. The number of reviews depends on how well known the brand is, and its availability in various parts. I still refer to that website whenever I spot a brand/blend I don't know anything about.

Virginia blends are reportedly superior in cob pipes, and I have found that to be accurate. However, each person is unique in terms of taste, so your best plan of attack is to purchase more corn cob pipes, dedicate each one to a different general blend (for example, English (with Latakia), straight Virginia, Virginia/Burley blend, Virginia/Perique blend, etc.), buy as many different blends in these categories, and take the next year or so to taste test until you have narrowed it down to your favorite two or three, or as I have, one.

every newbie that i've ever introduced them has loved them.
btw, in my opinion, i would recommend against NightCap, too harsh for a starter

I'm fairly new at the pipe smoking hobbie as well and if I was to recommend to myself again what to try first it would be mcclelland 5100 red cake. It's a non aromatic red Virginia that is naturally very sweet and a quite a creamy mellow smoke. It's not a complex blend and is very one dimensional but would be a great stepping stone that won't be to overwhelming right off the bat. This will give you time to progress into the more complex blends like the English that have a lot of different flavour profiles going on. This is just my 2 cents hope this helps.

Start with Carter hall or Prince Albert. Good tobacco that stays lit and it will help you build confidence. If they charged $17.99 a tin for these two and only released it twice a year people would rave about it.
