First smoke in a new to me Wiley

I recently picked up a estate Wiley pipe at a flea market. In another post I said I got it for $10 but actually got it, a Alpha Calabash, and a Hardcastle poker all for $20 and all in very good shape. I finally got to try the Wiley today. I don't know what to call the shape, it is like a large bent billiard with a tall bowl that is unevenly cut and rusticated around the rim. This pipe smokes wonderfully, I filled it with Petersons 3Ps and it smoked nice and cool all the way to the bottom with no relights. In fact I took some really long pauses and thought it would go out but it never did, I wonder if the large size of the bowl helps with this. I forgot about the strength of 3Ps and the large bowl had me quite dizzy by the end LOL. If the other two pipes smoke this well someone is probably rolling over in their grave because their kids let them go for $20. :D

I love my Wiley, glad to see yours is a good smoke too. I won mine by coming in third at the local pipe smoking contest, it's a bent freehand affair with a smooth finish and plateau on the rim. It is a pretty big pipe holding maybe an hour and a half or so of tobacco. Mine smoked well but there was always a bit of dottle for years until I made a concerted effort to get some cake in the bottom of the bowl. I smoked about a dozen bowls filled only about a third of the way and only then did the dottle never return. I guess the bowl was so large that I rarely finished a full pipe and never broke-in and caked-up the bottom portion of the bowl. Now it is one of my best smokers.
It sounds like you have a big bowl too but that yours is already broken in properly. I wonder what happened to Wiley. They used to have quite a few of his pipes at the local Tinderbox but I haven't seen them in a long time. I guess he is selling online, but I like to feel how they are in the hand. I'd like to get another big to smoke during football season. It'd be nice to have a Saturday pipe and a Sunday pipe, I figure Keith Jackson and Pat Summerall would've wanted it that way.

Have been eyeballing Wiley's for a while. Good to here they are good smokers. Didn't see your previous thread, but congrats on that score!
