this is certainly a change from aros, which until recently had been the only thing I ever smoked. Things changed when my dear uncle bequeathed his pipe collection to me; I've been trying many different styles, and I've especially enjoyed Virginias with just a hint of flavoring (e.g., Dunhill flake). I've *got* to get my hands on MB's Vanilla Flake!
Yesterday, I tried Peterson's University Flake and Mac Baren Golden Extra. I assume the earthy/peppery flavor one senses on the tongue's center is characteristic of Burley tobacco. Am I right about this? I love the mixture of sweetness and earthy spice one gets from the PUF. I'll need to exercise some patience with the Golden Extra. I enjoy the cooler smoke, but it is such a drastic shift from more standard aros and Virginias that I may need considerably more time with traditional Burleys.
Any suggestions for more blended variants are certainly welcome!
EDIT:
I'm on another bowl of the Golden extra, and it seems much better this time around. I'm detecting more sweetness, but I'm unsure if this is the blend or the leaf. And I'm not sure if the peppery note I was detecting earlier was the effect of something I ate. I'll keep puffin'!

Personally I've never found burley to have much "taste"... body? Yes. Nicotine? DEFINITELY, but no real flavor.
But maybe that's me.

PA was one I initially enjoyed and then grew tired of rather quickly.
The "peppery" taste, if it is found on the back of the mouth, seems to be what I recall of it, too.
Mix a little 1Q with it, actually more on the 50/50 nature, and it perks it up a bit.

You have listed some of my favourite blends there! I also find University and Dunhill Flakes a little "earthy", especially Dunhill. I'd describe it as almost a "mushroom" flavour. If you are enjoying the nicotine hit from those blends, you might want to kick it up a notch and give Peterson Irish Flake a try. If you REALLY want to go all out in the strength department - Samuel Gawith 1792 is a flavoured Virginia/Oriental blend that is very strong.
Gawith Hoggarth also do several Burley blends such as their Rum Flake. I hope you enjoy experimenting with a whole world of blends out there! :)

Both of those are good blends, each with some Virginias added, which is where I think the sweetness comes from.
I would suggest trying some more of MacB's burley based blends. London Blend, Scottish Mixture and Dark Twist Loose Cut are all good and each is a bit different in taste and character. They are all a blend of Va and burley, and a touch of Cavendish.
For straight burleys, I can't recommend Uhle's high enough. They are some of the best burley blenders around. Gl Pease has some great burley based blends too.
You will have a great time exploring all of them. 8)

A friend sent me a tin of the Mac B. Golden Extra a while back for working on some of his pipes. I like it and intend to get more. Would also like to try some of the Uhles burleys.

Many of the old "codger burleys" -Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Velvet,Kentucky Club, Granger, etc. - are also worth exploring.

Burleys are much subtler in flavors than other blends. As a certified Nicotine Wuss - never smoked cigs, mostly smoke latakia based blends - I tread very carefully here. :D Irish Flake, though tasty, is much too strong for me, and Uni Flake, which I also like the taste of, is still pretty strong. Dunhill Flake - formerly known as Dunhill Light Flake, is a Virginia, not a burley, and one of my faves. :puffy:

Believe it or not, but as a cigarette smoker coming from a pack of Camel a day, I actually enjoy a bulk I seem to be able to find quite easily around here, called "burley light". I was told it's Lane Limited Burley Mild. It's usually my morning bowl.
Am I nuts or just a rookie with an undeveloped palate ? ;-)

Also as an ex cig smoker burleys are a fave of mine. Carter Hall is my OTC blend. You may enjoy GLP's Cumberland, I love it. A flavorfull burley heavy blend is C&D's Riverboat Gambler. Another couple I enjoy are the Mac Barren's London Blend and Norwood both I have smoked all day at work. .

+1 on Solani's Aged Burley Flake - but it is pricey ($16?)

Try some Fireside by Park Lane, it has a little perique to give it some pop.

I also break in every new pipe with Boswell's Premium Blended Burley, less pop but a great smoke.

Lots of good suggestions here but let me add a couple more: Nut Brown Burley by Pipeworks and Wilke and any of the several excellent C&D Burley blends, like Epiphany, Morley's Best, and Pegasus. All of this were formulated by the late Bob Runowski, one of the country's premiere Burley blenders.
