So I'm a few weeks into my pipe smoking journey, probably about 20-25 bowls in (almost all of them different tobaccos). Today I got my first taste of tongue bite. I picked up a tin of Orlik Golden Sliced this morning and couldn't wait to get home and try it. I lit it up and all was well. Or so I thought! It burned really hot and before I knew it my tongue was really really sore! After smoking a few blends that are known for tongue bite I was led into a full sense of security thinking this Virginia flake wouldn't bite. How wrong I was! Any tips for helping to get rid of tongue bite? I really want another bowl (not of orlik though!) should I not smoke until its better? I guess I might not tell if I'm getting burned again?

Ditto what roth said. However, some people (like me) just don't react well with OGS. It wasn't as bad as your experience, but it definitely didn't agree with my chemistry. Same with My Own Blend 111 and with Newminster Superior Round Slices. All three of these give me a sharp, acidic feel on the tongue, almost like lemon concentrate. I have no idea what it is, but it's been consistent for me that way and I smoke a lot of VAs and Burleys and usually have no problems whatsoever. Must be some particular additive in these blends.

Wow! Thanks, that's some great advice! It really does feel burned, like I've drank coffee that's too hot. We don't have biotene over here in the UK but I'll just use some mouthwash and not smoke for a while. I really haven't had a problem with smoking slow so far, and I've noticed when certain blends need to be smoked slower than others but this one caught me by surprise. I actually rubbed the flake out and left it half an hour and thought that, if anything, it was a bit on the dry side. My favourite blends so far have been VA flakes. I love SG best brown and FVF and I haven't had any problems with either of those. Guess its just a learning curve I'm on?

Roth hit this one right on the mark. Nice job!
I would certainly try cube cutting flakes instead of rubbing them out next time. I have found they burn a bit slower and cooler that way.

If you can smoke Best Brown and FVF with no issue then it might have been your technique and not the tobacco. I would cube cut it next tine and see what happens. Also what size pipe did you use? I wouldn't go bigger than a group 5. Do not use regular mouth wash, it has alcohol and will burn the crap out of you. See if you can get Biotene off of Ebay, it is worth the effort finding it.

I have some regular no alcohol mouthwash, so I used that. Yeah, I was most likely smoking just smoking too fast. I'll have a rest and let it heal. I used a small poker pipe, the chamber is 19mm DIA x 32mm deep. Sorry, I don't know what group that is.
