Got my first Barling today.

Think i made a deacent deal, paid 25 USD with shipping.

First impression besides the odd blast is that it is light as a feather.
By Reading the info on Pipedia, i figure its a transition pipe.

Is there a way the see which year its from and what does the P stand for?

Very nice, and yes, post family era. Broad dating, 1962-70 most likely. $25 all in, yes a very good deal! The pipes from this period are very good pipes, I have several, and they are all good smokers! The P, no idea.

That is a cool pipe. Sablebrush is a Barling expert (he wrote the piped entry on Barling), and a recent induction into The Sinister Six, and I am sure he will have some observations.

Congratulations on your Barling. My first Barling was Post Family and that pipe was such a winner that I quickly got hooked on Barlings.

Your pipe looks to be in excellent condition and for $25, you got a steal deal. Post family Barlings get a largely undeserved bad rap. They did decline in overall quality after Imperial Tobacco took control of the factories, but the truth is that excellent pipes continued to be made. It's just that the product became very uneven after the family stopped running the business.

There is no way to tell exactly what year your pipe was made, though the earliest would be 1962. I've never seen that "P" stamp and have no idea what it means. It's even possible that the stamp was added by the original retailer. I've seen Family Era pipes that have extra stampings from several dealers.

The only important thing is whether or not it smokes well for you.

Thank you for all the replies.
Had my first Bowls in it today and it smokes great, adds a bit more sweatness to English blends.
The "P" is still a mystery but likely as you wrote Sable, it might be added by a dealer as the font seems to be a bit different.

I have mailed the seller to see if he knows anything.
