Aloha,

I recently bought this “estate” block meerschaum pipe from SP for $60. This is not only my first estate pipe but my first meerschaum. I was wondering how I would go about disinfecting this (mainly the stummel portion, the stem seems straight forward).

I also just got my first two estates, with one being technically my first "handmade" pipe. A JM Boswell oom paul and a Stanwell bent acorn with a zebrawood insert. I got them from SP. Not going to lie: I knew they cleaned them, but I had every intention of cleaning them myself when I got them because I didn't think they would be thorough. I was wrong. Both pipes are roughly two decades old, give or take, and they were cleaned to a sheen. Smoked sweet, and the price was very nice. I will be getting more estates in the future.

I don't have a pic of the Stanwell, but here is a pic of me with the Boswell. This has become my "house" pipe. Sorry for the bad quality, but I ain't a photobug.

Looks great! I was very pleased with the thorough cleaning on mine as well. There was a little gunk in the stem, but it was really minor.

They use denatured alcohol with a retort and use alcohol soaked cotton swabs on stubborn carbon and for the rims they use hand sanitizer gel. They're very thorough with their estate cleaning.
