I recently started a buddy of mine on pipe smoking. Just two days ago, he went out and purchased his first pipe; a little Czech of no particular pedigree. Anywho, I THINK it had a filter in the stem, because there is what seems to be a filter stabbed up into the pipe itself, and it is blocked. We attempted everything we could to get it out, but were stymied at every turn.

Perhaps someone else has had this misfortune befall them, or someone they know?

Thanks,

Collin

Welcome Collin,
If it is a filter you might try using some alcohol like Bourbon, or something a little stronger like Ever Clear to melt away the tars that may be holding it in place.

If it is something like a "stinger" a metal piece inserted into the stem, you'll need to just pull it out. I personally never understood the need for a stinger. They make the stem hard to clean, and clog very easily. I think they are supposed to work like a condenser, but are useless in my opinion.
Good luck, and welcome again.....

Have your buddy sign up too.

I have heard that putting the pipe in the freezer for several hours will help solve a variety of sticking and binding problems, like stems that won't come out of the shank, etc. But nothing like a stuck filter.
You might try it because different materials have different expansion/contraction properties, and the filter might loosen-up a little. I dunno, but it sounds like desperation time.

I agree on the freezer it will loosen up a stuck stem and may work in this case.
If you try the everclear, make sure that you wait till it dries completely as the everclear will make the briar expand and tighten up while it is wet.

The microwave for 30 second burts will heat up the tar and then you will be able to remove the filter with a set of oring picks . Could you post a picture .
