Hi Guys
I recently bought an Estate Pipe. It has a filter in it and my question is should i be able to remove this filter and use a carbon filter instead. It seems to be lodged pretty tight and there is no movement in it. Dont want to break it and wondering is it a permanent piece of the pipe. I have attached pics. Any info appreciated!
Thanks

Looks like a stinger, that pipe wasn't made for filters. It is removable though. Slowly heat the tip of it with a lighter and gently pull it free.

Hey @Chasing Embers,
some of the pipes I inherited from my grandfather were modified to cut the end portion of the stinger off leaving the threads to attach the stem.
I have a few more pipes with these stingers still intact. I think that are called “drinkless”?
Not sure the value and reason for the use in design of original pipe, but I don’t care for them. Hard to keep clean, seems to limit air flow and they get clogged easy.
I quit smoking these pipes for this reason. I’m thinking about modifying them as well.

Stingers help with loose tobacco not getting to your mouth, also the can help with the classic “gurgle” some pipes creat during smoking

If you can take them off cleanly, I see no reason not to. Makes cleaning the pipe easier.

Thanks for insight. Do you have pipes with these?
I can see how that might work. My experience with them is they are problematic. I’m going to proceed with dremmel tool cutting disk ops and remove the ends from them.
Using a pipe cleaner to remove occasional moisture during a smoke is easy.
Have a great day!
