Keeping in mind that there is an estate pipe market, what is the correct way to

Fill a bowl so that the briar on the top of the bowl does not burn and discolor

Thrax - I have 2 suggestions being a new pipper myself. A) Do a good job searching this forum and B) See if you can attend a pipe club or spend time with someone who knows what they're doing. I found that there are actually many ways to fill a bowl but spending time with an experienced smoker, showed me a way I hadn't been exposed to previously. Now i used that method 90% of the time.

Good advice from rothnh, but my take on it is basic. Fill the bowl, all the way up once you have it broke in

as you'd like. But never use a butane lighter. Matches inside, a Zippo out. 'A powered flame burns the rim'.

i think this is one part of pipe smoking that gets way over talked and thought i have been smoking a pipe for 17 plus years just put the tobacco in the pipe i don't do anything special just fill the bowl push it down and smoke it. all these different ways of packing a bowl are somewhat useful when smoking flake tobacco but ready rubbed tobacco just put it in the pipe and smoke don't worry about it burning to the bottom of the bowl. as for the rim getting burnt the best way to control that is using matches.

The best I can offer in the way of an opinions are these:
Always light your bowl with the rim level. If you are attempting to light the bowl (straight pipe) with your head tipped down the flame will contact the rim just after the puff and will/can scorch the rim.
The other is just don't get the flame any closer to the bowl than is necessary to draw the flame in. If you keep the flame above the bowl, puffing will draw the flame to the tobacco and only into the bowl and won't scorch.

YMMV

I think Zonomo had some good advice. Being around people who smoke pipes helps, watching youtube videos can help too.
